Hi
Watching Mike Bellevue's videos I noticed he had made a little gadget to help mark where to drill through for Ramrod Thimble and Barrel pin holes.
Well I thought I would make my own but different.
I got an el cheapo $3 combination square and drilled a 5/16" hole through. Through this hole I put a piece of 5/16" drilled rod with a 1/8" ole drilled through it.
In turn I put a 1/8" nail through this hole. All up maybe 10 minutes work and essentially reversible (almost). 😁
Perhaps it may help somebody.

The pictures are probably self explanatory.
By loosening the nut the nail can be pivoted and the protrusion adjusted.
I drilled the hole through the rule on the 1cm line so I can in effect measure from the nail.
The whole contraption can be removed or pivoted out of the way.
Also as the nail is offset I can actually sit a Ramrod pipe on the ruler and see exactly where the measurement sits on the pipe.
I could also use 1/16" or whatever size instead of the 1/8" nail to see exactly where the pin stock will strike.
I can already see how I could refine it but here it is for your consideration. If I did it again I would use the smallest threaded rod possible.
Can use it for scribing lines as well

I just measure the depth of the barrel channel using a caliper, then just make a pencil mark on the stock via the caliper. Havent had an issue yet using this method.

First rate plan beats guessing . No doubt about you ' You're the man' .

You honour me Rudyard. Unduly I must confess.
It was not my idea, I just tacked onto Mike's idea, nor is this gadget an essential, just another way that has some advantages.
It is the likes of Mike and yourself that deserve the thanks for teaching us all so much.

Great Idea! I measure from the top barrel flat, unless it's a round barrel, then I make sure I have a flat and true surface on the stock, then lay it on the drill press table with the barrel top up against a wood block which is C clamped to the table. So far so good, LOL!
