Homemade lube

Looking into making my own homemade bullet lube with some sort of combination of beeswax and food grade grease or oil. I was even thinking about doing a Ballistol mixture. I would love to hear any advice.

go out and shoot yourself a bear. render the fat down to oil. mix 50/50 with bees wax. works for me.
i go 65/35 bees wax to oil in the summer though as 50/50 can be a mess in higher temps.

250 grams of beeswax, add a tablespoon of olive oil. Heat until all the beeswax is melted and the olive oil mixed in. Works fine for me! I expect you could use Lanolin if you cant get beeswax and half the amount of olive oil. I can't, I'm allergic to the damned stuff!

In both your similar topics I note that folks have missed the "food safe" part. Although I'm pretty sure ballistol is not food safe either.

Pretty much any animal or vegetable oil combined with beeswax works. As a general rule, you use less beeswax to make it softer, or more beeswax to make it firmer. I've tried throwing in a little Ballistol and also tried throwing in a dab of Dawn, and I don't think either makes much difference. The one thing that makes it a whole lot easier to make is using "pelletized" beeswax, which melts a whole lot easier and faster than brick beeswax. I found it at a local arts & crafts store.

I have made and used the Paul Matthews lube on BP and smokeless with good result. I really need to mix up a batch of Emmert's as it is so traditional.
Something to consider: the boys at the British Militaria forums who shoot BPC Martinis, Sniders, percussion Enfields etc. have found that dipping the bullet nose into a tub of Udderly Smooth lanolin just before loading and firing has a salutary effect on accuracy and fouling control. May try this on round ball loads in the flint smoothie that is headed this way.

I've done my share of lube alchemy in the dim past and it worked out okay. But with so many excellent lubes available today it's easier, simpler and cheaper to just buy good lube rather than waste time reinventing the wheel.

No beeswax but I find Stumpy's Moose Juice to be as good or better than any other concoction I or any of my friends have come up with.

I’m hoarding your bear fat lube until I get down to fine tuning the .45 SMRs. Figured it was no since wasting it on sighting in.

I use 60% beeswax 20% olive oil and 20% pork lard.

A general purpose blackpowder solvent and liquid patch lube. Shake well before using

Castor Oil 3 oz.
Murphy's Oil Soap 1 oz.
Witch Hazel 4 oz.
Isopropyl Alcohol (91%) 8 oz.
Water (non-chlorinated if available) 16 oz.


I dip my patching in this twice and let it dry laid flat on wax paper in between. Makes a semi-dry patch material that's easy to carry & use. If you don't mind carrying a little bottle it's a GREAT liquid lube as is.

I can picture the Castor Oil acting as a lube but the other ingredients seem more of a solvent.

2 parts food grade lard from the Hispanic grocery store and 1 part beeswax for my hunting loads. Nothing beats a spit patch for match shooting. In my opinion anyway.
