Either a hammered piece of lead, or a strip of leather will do a better job. Oil the leather well, so it doesn't dry out and catch fire, itself. When you clean the lock, just drip some oil on the esposed leather, to renew its soft texture.

Actually, the lock needs to be seated better against the barrrel, but that takes time, patience, and a fine hand using a scraper, along with marking dye, to find the high spots in the lock mortise.

If the gap is uneven, that sometimes indicates that the bolster was not filed parallel to the barrel, and a little filing there can go along way to closing the gap. This is seen often when the barrel is tapered or round.

I did the same thing and had the same problem I used a slice of lead shaped to the pan and lock plate bolster and have been using it for 10 years now. Only time you ever have to worry about it is whenyou remove the lock otherwise it sits right in place.

There is a missunderstanding. The space is at the downside of the lockplate and the stock. but i think it will work with scraped leather too.

I think if you get a piece of wood like the type your stock is made of. Then with a sharp carpenters plane take couple of light sliver (ribbons) wet them ,then place a heavy object over them flat to dry over night.
Next a slever at a time soaked in Carpnters glue lay the slivers up against the wall of the Lock cut out a layer at a time until you made the lock cut out little undersize. Let it dry for few days ,then reinlet by using a scraper that you made out of an old screwdriver. If done in that manner you wont be giving up much as far as looks go.

Jack Haugh tought me that trick in case someones in the mood to argue..... :blah:

Have fun......
