I have 3 pistols ( not revolvers) that I take to the range. I just put them in socks to protect them. Tbere has to be a better way.

I use a hard case, but I cut the closed-cell foam from the original packaging to go into the case because the normal foam lining that comes in the case would put too much pressure on the side of the lock.

No. Just lay them in the foam. The cases are also used for other guns so i have to leave them uncut.
I do shove the range rods under neath the foam too.
I thought about just using the foam that was originally in the case, too. I just imagined the pressure on the lock, though, and it worried me.

This was what I did with the foam from the original packaging. I put it into the bottom of the case in place of the original foam.

Walk out the door with the colt .36 on my hip, belt hung low...my derringer, sometimes it just goes wherever i go in my back pocket or coat pocket...store, gas station, whatever... My 20 inch long single shot hunting pistol, i have yet to find a case for it, and have been considering cutting and sewing a rifle case into a handgun case....not a lot of cases on the market for 20 inch long handguns....but its my baby and i want to keep it nice.

Like many have already said,, a hard case, but don't fret.
Go to a local second hand store or a pawn shop. you can usually find empty tool hard cases (drills/saws) or a used hard rifle case for cheap.
Foam can be found in discarded couches and chairs, just grab the cushion, un-zip and pull the foam block out.
All ya need is a sharp knife. It's simple

I carry my single shot percussion target pistol to the range in a large hard case that came with foam liners. The pistol is pretty long, so I got a big steel sided case, about 25" x 16". Since it is long it is also wide enough that it also holds most of the accessories and ammunition that I need: Loading/cleaning rod, powder measure, small flask, two old plastic ball boxes ( one with balls, one with patches), and a handy flat can with accessories like patch worm, ball puller, spare nipple, nipple wrench. Short starter. Loading stand, in a cut-out in the foam. A pound container of 3F. Dead blow hammer.

It's been a long time since I forgot to take something I needed.

This is a Plano case I picked up a couple weeks ago for this exact purpose. Heres the link.

Thats a Traditions Trapper, a Pedersoli Kentucky, and a Rogers and Spencer Tetris'd in there. Snug as the proverbial bug in a rug.

I use a black plastic shooting box with a top tray. The pistols are just usually wrapped in a face towel. My best target pistol has a walnut case that I made.
