i am seriously looking to get into smoothbore now after breaking the bank on flint pistols and rifles, and i can not beleive the prices i am seeing! i just can't beleive that i can't find a decent fowler/shotgun for under $800. i want a single barrel in flint, or a double percussion. 12 or 20 gauge would work for me. what have some of you paid? i feel like i am a sucker that just isn't looking in the right places. i would like to spend around $500. that would buy a heck of a nice any regular gun. am i stingy or just looking in the wrong spots (internet)?

You can buy a Navy Arms double in 12ga for around $500.
As far as a flintlock fowler,.... barrel, $225, lock $100, etc, etc, not gonna happen.

the parts for a good fowler will be about 500-600$
the sky is the limit for someone to build it.

how handy are you ? a simple fowler kit shouldn't be too hard to put together for someone with a little skill.

i am pretty handy, i am buidling my first board bow as we speak, and i smith all my own centerfires within reason. the navy sounds good although i can't seem to locate them on many sites. ill take another look

tvm is advertising a "kit" in muzzleblast..62 cal. with all the parts,barrel inletted and ramrod drilled,for $420...gotta inlet the lock and triggers according to pics...cheapest "kit" i've seen..but ya gotta be handy,,,,or very very lucky to run across one for under $700...even that's a deal!

Check out the muskets at Middlesex village,They have a fowler over there,,Their made in India but the french musket I bought was nice for the money..If you wanted you could refinish it to your standards.
The biggest problem Ive seen with these is no conformity from gun to gun as to stiffness of the springs...Mark

A decent flint fowler for under $800? It's as likely as finding someone selling a $100 bill for $70. You can barely get a decent flint fowler KIT for $800. Then again, I suppose it depends on your definition of "decent".

i dunno it seems strange to me that the difference between rifles and shotgun could be so vast. i would have thought it the other way around. thanks for you input guys, im about to check out your suggestions right now

after reading the how to at sitting fox im not sure i am that handy :redface: better look for a used one somewhere, but i can't seem to find navy arms on their webste, are their shotguns discontinued?

Check out Cabela's, they have a double barrel percussion shotgun in 10, 12 or 20 gauge for $650.00. I hope this helps.

It is not the parts for a god rifle are comparable with the parts for a good smoothbore, there are a lot of low cost production rifles and few comparable production smoothbores, this is a specialized sport with a low volume of guns being made this typicaly means what may seem like higher than normal prices.

several shotguns (used) are listed there, just about in your price range

He will also build it for you, he built my french fusil 20 ga. which I am very pleased with.

Few things compare to going afield with a fine flintlock fowler. They are worth the extra cost, and will do most anything a rifle will do plus they can take birds on the wing. I have a 10 bore being built, and I can hardly wait until it arrives.

Check[url] GunBroker.com[/url] they have several smoothbores in your price range right now. Don't know how long they will stay there. I think Birdog had the right idea on smoothbores just get a good used English gun and go have fun.
