Yeah...5/16" is another story, or a whole other story. I believe a vent, if one is going to vent, should be very tiny, as in a wire-gauge drill.
 
I rotate the nipple on my Thompson 45 Cal Sennaca between 3-4 different ones. All the correct ones for it. I am very careful how I clean them and for me they last for years. Occasionally if I have damp powder or dryball the gun, Who me do that? I pull the nipple and back feed some NO. 4 powder thru the nippel hole. Works every time.
