I also have a liner stuck on my recently acquired flintlock and have considered removing it. The only reason is I'm not sure if it's rusted or not. The bore is nice but there were spots of rust elsewhere on the rifle. If you end up removing it, please post an update with your methods and results.

When you replace the touch hole liner, be sure to use a liner with the same thread diameter and pitch. @1911tex didn't identify his rifle so I can't speculate about the size of his liner. I can recommend that he uses a good high temperature anti-seizing lubricant in the threads. At some time in the far distant future, that person removing the touch hole liner will thank him.

felpro c5a anti-seize. great on all gun threaded parts. copper base. developed for NASA. used extensively on turbine engines, aircraft inspection plate screws, 10/32 alloy n back 30 yr. were .50 each. one wing had over 300 screws. would use 2 left hand cobolt bits to get one un lubed ones out.

I think curiosity is a good enough reason to take out a touch hole liner.
Curiosity? And destroy the existing touch hole liner in the process? Guessing with that logic there are a numbers a products around your house opened up in the name of curiosity that need repair or no longer work.

There plenty of reasons to remove a touch hole liner, but a destructive removal in the name of curiosity doesn’t make my list.

Curiosity is a poor reason to remove a touch hole liner. Some can be easily removed because of a screw slot and some have a socket for an Allen wrench. These imply that the touch hole can be removed for cleaning, but regular removal is simply not necessary. Best to leave a touch hole liner in place until the touch hole is so enlarged that accuracy is lost.

As said above, plug the hole, muzzle up and fill to just above the liner with Kroil and let sit for a couple of days.

Use an e-z out or a screw extractor. Use the style which @64Springer posted the pics of.

If still stuck, and if the barrel is out of the stock, some light heat with a propane or MAPP torch on the area surrounding the liner will do lots of good. This is, of course, barrel finish permitting.

If it's still being stubborn after all: Wet both ends of a Q-Tip and stick in the freezer. After heating the breech around the liner and right before you use the extractor, set icy q tip right in the center of the liner for a few seconds. This will cause a quick contraction of the liner itself and facilitate removal.

Good luck gladiator.

EDIT-- be sure to start ASAP--As Small As Possible-- with the drilling and extractor size if you do not know the thread diameter of your insert.
