Is a 32 cal. large enough gun to kill coyote at 50 yards or
should I use my 50 cal.? If not, what is the largest size
animal you should use a 32 cal. on? Is a groundhog fair game? :hmm:

Shot placement is the key, whether you're shooting a .416 Rigby or .17 HMR. A .32 is capable of killing a coyote just as quick as a .22 as long as it was struck in a vital spot. :imo:

Thanks for the info. I'll be heading up to PA in Spring to
hunt woodchucks and hopefully nail a coyote. :)

I killed a coyote a few years back with a .32 cal. Crockett rifle at over 150 yds. The ball hit him in the ear and he never moved. We paced the shot off afterwards and figured it was between 150- 160 yds. Longest, luckiest, offhand shot i have ever made with any gun.

50 yard, heart/lung shot should work fine on the Coyote Cong with a .32, I imagine that ball flattens out good. Probably good out to a bit further than that.

:hmm:

"Someday", I'm gonna have the Birddog6 make me a nice .38" calibre long rifle just for shooting Coyotes.

:master:

On a 'yote, I'm thinking that a fast-stepping small ball would drop them as fast as the bigger calibers, so again your .32 should work great. They are tough animals, but thinned skinned and light boned.

Speaking about over-kill, I once shot one with a 625 grain minnie over 110 grains of ffg.

Reb that sounds like a 'yote I took once, my bullet went in one ear, and out the other. Definately no damage to that hide. However, that one was with a cartridge rifle so I guess it don't count!!

There's no doubt the .32 will kill a coyote if the shot is well placed. My experience with yotes is they are very tough critters and don't give up the ghost easily. :shake:

I love my .32 but I think I'd opt for the .50 on the wild dogs. :m2c:

Never tried it with the .32, but all of this talk of coyotes lately has me ITCHIN to!!!

Good luck

What does one do with a coyote ::? I dont think their fur is worth much anymore and i dont think they would be fine eating. We have them around here but they scatter when the timber wolves come through. No mistaking the howl of the wolf with that of the coyote.

Coyote pelts taken when the fur is prime always bring good money if they're handled properly. They also look good as a rug on the wall, head mount or full mount. The one I took with a longbow I had made into a full mount.

I'd rather have a .36 so's I could use a .357 hollow based wadcutter for a minie ball. :winking:

That is wild, taking a coyote with a bow...!! Good thing you were'nt wearing that blaze orange hat.

Soft tannned coyote hides can go for as high as $200, or that's the asking prices I've seen. But "make" your own and you can make really cool hats, bow quivers, pouches, all sorts of neat stuff.

Coyotes usually multiply and populate quite well, and it usually helps the deer populations during the winter to take a few coyotes, even if you don't use the hide.

Don't wear that out when yer calling coyotes do ya? Know a guy that got shot in the groin with a muzzleloader doing that. Him and a friend were out calling and i guess they lost track of where they each were. Anyway, the friend sees this coyote and shot the other guy in the groin. Got to be called 'Ol 3 balls after that.

Right on MountainKen...that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about!! Sitting around the campfire with a cool coyote hat/cape certainly creates quite a "persona" or presence.

Well I hope 3-balls got to return fire...and never hunts with that dude again.
