And given I am from East TN, I am thinking one of 2 eras:

1) RevWar long rifle, like the Overmountain Men would have carried to King's Mountain. I am a direct descendent of an Overmountain Man.

2) Early American long rifle, like what Col. Crockett would have used.

This will be a long-term project and I am just gathering info for now. Is there really any difference between what might be found in the Watauga Association and what would be found in the Crockett home in Lawrenceburg in 1821?

Can't help you with your 1), but here is a couple of pics of a bench copy of one of Crockett's early rifles (said to be his first rifle but ????).

The write up for the build was in the January 1989 copy of Muzzle Blasts (if you can find a copy).

Dixie Gun Works has a blueprint/pattern for the rifle (Crockett pattern)

Anyhow, here's the pics

I got my first flintlock in 1975 and still shooting them. It's a disease. "LOL"

There is something about flintlocks, I'm not sure what it is.

I keep telling myself I like my percussion guns just as much as I do my flintlocks, that I actually kind of like the percussions more, but, I keep going for the flinters first when I get ready to go shooting. The last two guns I've had made were flintlocks and everything I'm really reading about or interested in involve flintlocks.

It's weird. .

The rifle pic posted is a beauty, alright. Realize flinters are addictive; no cold turkey allowed.

HillbillyAO...my super great grandfather was in Capt. George Taylors Company as a private. He was only 17 yo when he fought at Kings Mtn. Hey weuns might even be relations......I got my first flintlock about one year ago(one of them Italian remakes)Its ignition was so bad that I named the gun "Flinch"..Yes everyone is right I am now hooked.

Go fer it! It's a blast...next thing you know, you've got a some roughed out parts, a barrel, and a nice piece of curly maple sitting on your work bench...enjoy my friend!

Too late!!!!! I've already got a 56"long Kentuk .45 cal smoke pole That I acquired from an estate sale that was 75% done, curly maple stock that was finished in a light gold, green color( Its name is "String Bean"). I am in the process of breaking in the barrel.

I think he said 56" long, which would be about a 38" barrel, and that's a pretty normal length.

I have trouble finding people that make barrels longer than 48". To my knowledge, FCI (Mr. Burton) is the only one. Are there any out there making them longer? At some point barrel length starts bordering on the ridiculous, but I don't think 48" is it.

14"pull, 56" total..I have not got the picture on the internet thang figgered out yet.. Yep the rifle has a gold tone to the light green with brass fittins, hence it looks like a long thin Stringbean......P.S.....Live in GA. but the family came from the Seiver County Tn area..Still a bunch with the same last name livin up there.
