Barrel was gifted to me. Not sure of the markings. Came from a collection of barrels of a builder who passed away. Interested in building a shotgun/smoothie from it.
What do the marks tell us?
Is it worth the attempt?
thanks!

Barrel mics out at .640. 37 inches long

I think they did make an octagon to round trade gun pattern. I’ll need to look!

Is the rifling gone ? I know parker Hale made enfields didn't know they made octagon to round, I don't know much 😞
This barrel is a smoothbore. And after further inspection, it is twist steel. I would be using it for a black powder smoothbore build. No areas of concern I see. The bore has some very light pitting, nothing crazy and nothing catching on my patches. It was either cut at the breech and retapped or ignition went though the breech plug. No tapped or drilled ignition through the wall. Is it worth it? Because it is one Cool piece!

Really depends on how much you want it. Not being a smarty pants, but at my age, I find many "projects" that'll never be completed that started with exactly what you're looking at. A bargain is a bargain if YOU like it, period.

I moved some stuff around today -including an English percussion shotgun barrel I know I've had since 1969 with the intent of "Someday...". Buy it.

I have so many parts laying around the workshop. Can't even remember how long I have had most of them. Some I can't even remember WHY I have them.

Yes, I am on my way to the same kind of collection! Lots of plans and not as much time! Good thing 40 is still young ...right? 😂. Lucky for me the barrel was given to me. Should I have any reservations on shooting a barrel of this age/ spiral steel?
