My pawn shop find with the neglected bore just won't shoot worth a hoot with anything I try in it, ie, RB, PA conicals, Maxi-Balls and Great plains bullets.

I was wondering, if I get the barrel re-bored to 54 cal. and re-rifled by Mr. Hoyt, could I still end up with a "stinker" in the long run?

don't see how the other option would be a SB msde outa it.....I love smoothys :v

Why not call Mr. Hoyt and ask him personally.

He makes his living working with barrels, none of us here do.

Why ask a cardiologist to remove your hemorrhoids if you have them. Go to a person who can help and that is what they do for a living, seems simple does it not?

ya might check & see if the barrel can be wiggled around any in the stock. sometimes those t/c's just need to be bedded properly. for what it's worth & luck to ya friend, bubba.

If the barrel has been neglected, how is wiggling the barrel going to fix an inaccuracy problem?

You might want to clean the heck out of that barrel. A lot of those guns that won't shoot are just full of lead from conicals. Takes a lot of effort to get lead out if that's what the problem is and the barrel will appear to be clean when it isn't. JB and some fine steel wool is what I'd use.

If cleaning it doesn't do it, I guarantee that having Bobby Hoyt re-rifle it will leave it more accurate than it came from New Hampshire.

I had him rebore a .50 T/C to .54 about 6 weeks ago and it was worth every penny. It went from borderline useless at anything other than about 30 yards to fantastic.

it's somethin' easily & cheaply checked before ya trash a barrel or spend money on it that might not be needed. if it's not solidly bedded in the stock it can move on firin' scatterin' yer shots hither & yon even if yer barrel's perfect. why do you think competition shooters do so much glass-beddin'?

Sounds like he'll be getting another barrel in the mail soon!

Just snagged a TC 50 cal barrel on Ebay for $120 shipped. Seller says excellent bore and the pictures looked good. Only thing I have to transfer over to the new barrel is the rear sight from the "stinker".

Turns out the barrel from Ebay is a total POS. No rifling for at least 1.5" back from the muzzle and it's pitted. My original barrel is pristine compared to this tomato stake. It's going back to the seller and I'm getting my money back. This is the first time I've had a problem on Ebay. :cursing:

GaCop,lately I have been getting burned on E-Bay gun parts.I got a couple of TC barrels described as having excellent bores.Total manure, then you contact them and they go I didn't think it had rust or pits when I sent it out.Duh!These guys are getting top dollar for TC parts and fudging and hiding everything they can about the gun part. They misrepresent the part completely then want you to pay to ship it back. The problem is I don't think half the buyers that get junk call the seller on it.As always buyer beware, but when you don't have the part in your hand it is tough.

Well, there's not a thing to do but decide what style and twist of .54 caliber rifling you want it to have.
You'll have a custom made to your order shooter, the way you want it.

I plan on sending Mr. Hoyt a T/C barrel to be rebored from .50 to.54 caliber in July...just can't get the accuracy from this barrel no matter what I've tried...did pick up a Green Mountain slip in barrel and this baby is a tack driver...everything I have heard about Mr. Hoyt's work has been positive! :v
