From Duelist 1954 (nice to see Mike out there doing his thing after all he's been through lately) A great take, with some research, on whether "sheriff" models were really a thing back in the day

 
possibly the lack of Remington examples could be simply because so many more colts in circulation? or possibly the Remington police model in .36cal was so attractive that the typical Remington fan simply bought the police model instead of cutting down the full size army?
 
As much as I like watching Mike B, I would be go with the advertising of the day as what defined what (or even mfg specific).

On a totally different subject a guy made the remark, if you want to know what they were thinking or aiming at/for, read the advertisements of the day.

Its not like a Sheriff could not carry a police or a police officer could not carry a so called Sheriff.
