Magpies, indeed vermin held in the lowest regard. They invade songbird nests, maim the frantic parents trying to protect it and kill the young. Young vulnerable birds leaving the nest for the first time provide magpies with great sport. I have seen them kill, and then abandon what they have killed.
Starlings are the next worst, but that's another story.

They are a prolific predatory bird over here and any real conservationist is keen to remove them.
