I bought a Lyman Great Plains Rifle Special Edition Kit. At least that was what it said on the box it came in. But the only markings on the barrel says DA140238 an oval with a DP in it an PEDERSOLI - cal. 50 - 1:48" . So is this a Lyman or a Pedersoli? My main reson for asking is I took it out today for the first time to shoot it along with my Traditions St. Louis model rifle. While cleaning them after a "Wonderful day of shooting" I noticed the number 11 nipple wrench worked on the Traditions but not on the Lyman\Pedersoli. So I went to Pedersoli site and they don't have my gun listed. Okay no problem so I go to Lyman site and they do have it listed but not by the DA140238 number stamped on my barrel. So two questions. One what is it? Two anybody know which nipple wrench/tool will fit it?
Oh both rifles shoot great especially for my very first time shooting Black Powder. Hah I'm no longer a virgin.
Okay that's it thanks.

Many purveyors import firearms and stick their name on the item.
They are usually made to the purveyors specifications but will also carry the manufacturers genic parts.
I would of thought that any gun store that sells nipple keys for Pedersoli percussion guns and rifles sans any percussion muskets would be able to cater for your needs.

AFAIK, kits sold in the USA are devoid of serial numbers - this used to be the case. It's odd about the nipple wrenches though. A traditional wrench is a traditional wrench - my Pedersoli wrench fits the Butler-Creek AM nipples on my Ruger Old Army just fine.

Call the Log Cabin Shop. They are very good at sorting out questions like this, and will have the nipple wrench you need........

Lyman Great Plains rifles are made by Investarms. Lyman just puts their name on it. Recently Lyman has contracted Pedersoli to make a series of their Great Plains rifle touted as the signature series. These signature series rifles are available as kits and this is what you have. Lyman does not make their own rifles. The number you mention is the serial number not a mode number. Nipples vary in size and which wrench will fit depends. Use a small crescent wrench or order another nipple wrench and use a file to make it a tad larger to fit your nipple.

It appears that you have an early version of the Lyman Signature Series Kit made by Pedersoli and marketed by Lyman. Your rifle would not be listed on the Pedersoli site as the rifle is still a Lyman, its just made by Pedersoli and not by InvestArms.

I would remove the nipple and replace it with a nipple that is fitted to your nipple wrench. You should find a small ignition wrench to fit the flats on the nipple and remove it.

+1 here. Also you can make a nipple wrench from a small 1/4 drive socket and a Dremel. Just cut it to size. I have some small ignition wrenches. Too small for about anything else anyway.

Okay thanks everyone. I decided to just buy two Ted Cash No. 11 replacement heads for his ratchet wrench since I have a Chapman screw driver set that has a ratchet included. I’ll file one down to fit the Lyman/Pedersoli rifle. And I guess from now on I’ll just call it “my rifle” and not worry about who made the kit.

You are correct I mis-named the kit. It is a GPR Lyman Signature Series Kit made by Pedersoli. Thanks for keeping on the straight and narrow.

Just an update for anyone interested. I received my two Ted Cash No. 11 ratcheted nipple heads from Log Cabin today and they work great with GPR. They are a little sloppy on the Traditions St Louis but that’s okay since I have the cheap nipple wrench that fits it fine. So I don’t think the problem was with the GPR being wrong or too big as much as the Traditions being a little small. So thanks for all the input and have a great day.
