My .58 cal colonial muzzleloader kit is in the mail. I bought a smooth rifle for the adaptability don't see myself shooting 200 yards; too old to see that far anyway.

I have some ideas for finishing but will curb my impatience and go slowly.

At the risk of raising the ire of the antiestablishment bunch, I suggest a traditional looking finish. Tannins, Aqua Fortis, your choice of an analine dyes, and maybe Jim Chambers finish or similar if you got a Maple stock with any curl at all. Post pics and have fun!

Well I was being a smart ass. Of course I am planning doing a traditional finish. Though sunburst blue stock and plated gold hardware, who knows. }:‑)

Yeah, but, you know, I've read that there were some trade muskets or such that had red or blue painted stocks, back in the 18th C. Anyone recall that? Must have read it in Muzzleloader or Muzzle Blasts, some article, an inventory mentioned it, and I think one modern maker painted his stock thusly.
