Lace-up frontier style slings and crescent stocks..........

I've been trying to find the answer for this but have not had any luck. So, I thought I would make a thread inquiring.

I'm interested in purchasing a couple of lace-up, frontier type slings. One for my CPR and one for a Crockett Squirrel Rifle. They both have crescent stocks.

Anyone out there that has tried those style slings on crescent stocks? If so, do they fill the inside of the crescent?

No experience with this directly, but being made of leather you can trim the width of the piece that folds over the crescent to get a better fit, assuming there's enough material to keep the attachment/lacing points.

October Country and Triple K seem to have similar designs that are shown on crescent butt rifles, but I don't know how those crescents compare. I did find pics of an OC sling on Winchester 1873 with a crescent butt and it fills most of the crescent. Same with the Triple K pics I saw, along with a few others from older posts on this forum. In all of them, it appears the leather fills the crescent without following the shape, so it may feel very different on the shoulder. Note that I don't know how soft the material is, so it may conform to the shape once under pressure/shouldering the rifle.

Brass Stacker makes a chunkier "No Drill" sling for winchester rifles, and has a version for the 1873s/crescent butt models, but given that it uses snaps the size and shape may not fit your rifles. If I remember I can compare my Uberti 1873 Win to my Crockett after work this evening and see how close they match.

This is my Traditions Ky. Flintlock. Strap ( don’t remember the brand) is 1&1/4”. So…this is how mine fits.

That looks like a good option. Does that strap through the BP hurt the shoulder?

I checked my Crockett vs 1873 Win and the height?(heel to toe) is pretty close, but the Crockett has a noticeably deeper crescent. So based on pics I saw, the universal slings will have a little harder time fitting that space without bunching or preventing full contact with the crescent, unless you trim them a bit.

Another member on here (Gum Slew Muzzleloader) posted some pics of one of those lace-up slings used on a crescent stock. Going by the pics, it appears as if his particular type holds pretty tight to the shape of the deeper crescent of the Crockett rifle. Yeah, it’s sure no 3”, foam-padded sling attached to swivels at bottom of rifle! Still it does get rifle from point A to point B.

I have one of these, made of thin suede. I bought it years and years ago and had it on my Lyman Trade Rifle. It fit the crescent plate well and I had no complaints about it. I no longer use a sling on my rifles. Would be happy to mail it for you to try out.

Mine laces on the RH side of the stock. I still had no issues with it, being left handed.

way back when I tried the lace on leather ones 6 of us that was all we used for hunting. when I got my first Renagade it had factory sling stud and thimble since then I have done all of my guns with a version of that if you don't want to drill another hole in the stock put the stud in a screw hole of the toe plate and get one of the tube clamps for a Win. 94/Marlin thats sized for your thimble now you can attach any sling you want and remove it when your sitting in the stand so it doesn't snag when your trying to bag that deer you've been waiting all day for

Hey Ed, Don't know if this will help, I've had this on my Cherokee for a couple of years now. I don't like the 1' strap and will eventually put a wider one on it but other than that, it works fine.

Take care when using leather against brass. If left on for the summer the leather will tarnish the brass.

Thanks, that does help. Certainly is an option and most likely what I'll be purchasing for my Crockett.

I just spent about an hour searching for attachment for a tubular magazine rifle that I know I have somewhere, but was unable to locate it. I would think they are still available. So I'm still not sure what method I will go with on my GPR.

I bought one from October Country this fall, well built, for a TC with an elk load. Does cushion a bit, carries pretty well. Had to put another hole in rear of part that goes around barrel to keep it down below sight line.

Are you stuck on lace up slings?

If not, I have a simple sling that doesn't lace on and doesn't interfere with your current cheekpiece. It works well on any shape buttstock. It rolls up to about the size of a duck egg. The barrel end is similar to the 2nd picture by Big Tom. The stock end is very simple and unobtrusive.

It doesn't stay on the gun...it's used as needed taking seconds to install or remove. It could be made by anyone that can do some simple leather stitching...and only a very minimal amount.

I can take pictures and post if anyone is interested.
