So, there is leather, then, there is buckskin, it's different.
It's not made the same an it's a different material when processing is complete.

I used my buckskin, that I made myself ,
for a ball patch, iv tryed leather, but buckskin works bester as it absorb grease better than leather
Most people on the frontier I believe did use buckskin wadin an ball patchin.

This thread was started December 3, 2009. Just saying.

As for leather wads, yes I have been using them exclusively for years. I prefer them over any paper product but that is my own personal preference. I do lube them in beeswax and olive oil slightly. Judging by my velocity readings they do much better than paper products. However, you shoot what works for you guys.

This month's Muzzle Blasts, page 32, has a quote from Arnold Burges (The American Sportsman, 1885), part of which reads....
"Those living at a distance from the city had better always be provided with a 'punch' for cutting wads, so that in case of need, or for economy's sake, they can be cut out of an old hat or stiff pasteboard or leather."

Has anybody used leather as a wad before? What might make leather better as a wad than the various cardboards typically used today?
On a couple of patterning sessions I tried leather wads in a .54 smooth rifle. Didn’t see any advantages, but I can see that additional experimentation might yield better results.
