Due to age, eyes and an on going divorce I will be getting out of Black Powder shooting. Can I legally sell what powder I have on hand, trade it or give it away? Not wanting any troubles to come up later. Thanks,

I am not a US citizen so don’t take as gospel, just what I’ve read on here.
It would most likely be illegal for you to sell, barter or trade black powder, but you can give it away.

If you are selling weapons or accessories just add the powder to it as a bonus. You would be giving the powder away.

You are not allowed to sell the powder. You could donate it to a local blackpowder club or give it away to a friend. Barring anything else, dump it into your flower garden, the Nitrogen makes a nice fertilizer.

Sure! Just sell to fellow, known, shooters and "leave no paper trail"! Do it "quietly", it's a legal product, but you wouldn't give it to a total stranger on the street, so to speak. Good luck in you future endeavors!

If the powder is real black powder, all of the posts above are correct.
If the powder is a modern synthetic powder for muzzleloaders it is not considered to be an "explosive" by the Fed's. It is a combustible propellant.
As such, you can sell it or give it away or dump it on your lawn. If you do dump it on the lawn, don't forget to hose it down with a lot of water. We don't need someone walking by and flipping a lit cigarette butt into your lawn full of fully active powder.:D

I saw a hamburger stand at a county fair in the 1990's, where a local Boy Scout Troop was raising money. They could not "sell" food as they were not licensed food handlers. They were allowed to give food away, without penalty. So their sign read,

"FREE Half-Pound Burger, with every purchase of a roll of antacid tablets.
Antacid tablets $3.00".

Perfectly legal, and in fact the county food inspector gave them the idea. No law against what price you set for a perfectly legal product to sell.

So as some have suggested, you can sell something, and "throw in" a can or powder here and there as a "thank you gift".

Warning: If you "Gift it" and ship it anywhere in the US you will have to pay Hazmat fee's. Do not just stick it in a package. It will also have to be marked "Black Powder for Small Arms" with the appropriate decals. I used to work for the Post Office a long time ago and know this is still true today. USPS/UPS/FED EX.

I have no knowledge of the USPS, but I'd bet you couldn't get this sent in today's post-911 era. Maybe the fellow should go to his nearest shooting/gun club and offer it. Plus, he doesn't say how much he has, but it can't be all that hard to carefully dispose of!

Please do not ship the powder. That opens up a whole new realm of issues for you with the USDOT. It is not as simple as it might appear.

I am a retired USDOT Hazardous Materials Program Manager.

It would help if you finished your profile and we knew where you are. You may be close enough for a fellow member to come pick up your box of balls at $?? and get a bit of free powder in the process...
