I bought one of thease guns five or six years ago NIB. It was unsafe to shoot, the cylender did not line up with thr barrel It was way off.
I E-mailed the people at Pietta with my problem. They told me I was just a big cry babby and to kiss off. I sold the gun at aloss, tell the buyer what was wrong wit it.
After the way I was treated by Pietta I would never buy from them again!

That's a shame they did that. I have always had good customer service with fire arm related companies. (do you hear that Maytag!) It's to bad you won't try Pietta's again, the ones I have are nice. I would rate my LeMat at 99%, just a minor sanding scratch on the main frame that didn't get polished off before bluing.

Before my knees and back went south i was a master linoleum and carpet layer. I installed floors for 30yrs. IMO if you want to learn a trade you need to serve a apprentceship there is no better way to learn than under the supervision of a master mechanic.

Hey, LeMat.

No harm done, no offense taken. I enjoy reading a thorough essay on our hobby, even if most of it is not new. Most black powder nuts just can't pass up an opportunity to talk about it

Even though I have been shooting percussions for a couple of decades and flinters for maybe five years, I just bagged my first deer with a muzzleloader yesterday. Specifically with an early Virginia left-handed flintlock made by TVM. Beautiful piece and amazingly accurate at 50 to 60 yds.

Still have not decided on the Lemat. The price is a little off-putting.

Anyhow thanks to all of you who answered my plea for information.

thank you , sjoe. for some reason i forgot to look at your stats.

i noticed you shoot southpaw for your own reason.. i have had to do it all my life.. try doing bolt action and .45 1911's for some real fun... not !

fortunately, these bp folks seem to have gotten it right from the git go - they're all ambidextrous !

get the lemat from cabela, try it for a month, and send it back if you don't like it.. one of their reviewers said "... got it, didn't like it, and sent it back..." they will refund or exchange - no questions asked.

come on , charlie, that was 5-6 *years ago*. production standards have improved or why else would cabela, dixie, and others be selling them month after month.. you don't see any other posts with that defect here, do you....

my cylinders are in absolute perfect alignment because i've checked with a bore light stuck all the way down the barrel.. madcratebuilder just bought his and he said it is "99%" - no mfg of any reproduction model is 100% perfect on every piece.. it just can't happen.

i wish i had a nickle for every time gm, ford, chrysler, et al have issued factory recalls for their *life threatening* mistakes.. i'd have my store in sf with cash to burn..

One of the nice things about pistols is that I can still shoot right handed with my left eye. That does not work with rifles :surrender: except for my oldest deer rifle, a .243 Mauser, that I rigged up with a scope offset to the left  .

Cabelas seems to have only the cavalry model listed, and from what I have read, I would rather buy the navy model. Dixie has it on sale for "only" $725, a nice chunk of change for me at the moment. Should I order it, though, Dixie's return policy sounds pretty liberal, too. I am still on the fence, undecided which way to jump.

Thanks, madcratebuilder. I looked at Gunbroker and actually bid on three Lemats. The costs kept creeping up, so I finally gave up :surrender: and decided to just order a new one from Dixie. I rationalized it as an early Christmas present to myself. :rotf:

I am looking forward to taking it to the range and creating a lot of thunder and smoke.

Thanks to everyone who responded with comment and advice.

hey - good luck to both of youz.. the first volly or two might go a little rough, but you'll get the hang of it real soon, i'm sure..

i wish i could get a look at your face when you lift 'em up for the first time fully loaded.. ha! are you in for a shock.

also, there is a new addition to the kit for these courtsey of "madcratebuilder".. look in the want-ads here for his two bit side case set that you might want to get so you can clean internal parts.. he made some for himself, i have a set as well, and there are more for sale right off the web.. the two pronged bit fits perfectly for removing the left side plate nut..

check it out, and have fun with those bad boys.
