This is a Jackie Brown "in the white" project I did about ten years ago it's a .54 smoothrifle, no buttplate or entry thimble or side plate single lock screw has a 3/4" tallow hole, plain maple stock,.54 cal. oct to round 42" barrel, I did not care a lot for the non tapered oct section it just seem "off" in appearance but shot very well and I do not like that barrel type for wingshootng with out a rear sight, I do not have a full length pic anymore

I've posted this before, but...

Unknown maker; .36 cal., 36"-38" straight octagon Green River bbl., "Goulcher" lock, curly ash stock, no buttplate, horn heel and toe...

All great guns. But, I have always considered a "poor boy" to be a gun with out a buttplate, sideplate rear pipe or a nosecap.
I'd post some photos, but don't want to upset roundball or lockjaw.

Thanks for the memory jog, my JB smoothrifle did not have a nose cap an early "recycled" English roundfaced lock and had two simple rolled sheet metal rammer thimbles as I recall, I figured it to be a post 1800 gun, I left plenty of rasp marks on the stock for an extra oldtimey plain gun look. Those are all very nice looking guns, though some seem a bit to "nice" for the Poh boy concept that is in my mind but that is just a personal perspective thing.

Aw shoot, Mike. Go ahead, you know you want to and we want to see them.
:)

Go ahead and post some pics Mike, I suspect you are well booked out and have a very specific customer base so I see no attempt at "self promotion" being an issue, I look at these type of threads as educational, and it would also be good to hear more thoughts from the forum on what "makes" a Poh Boy,what references folks use for them, what time frame they fall into if anything specific and other details members may have on their minds about this type of gun.I dubble dawg darest ya...shew me yern and I wilst shew ya mahn. :hmm: We should be able to look at evryones guns and hear their thoughts with oput a whole load of K-warp commin' down we just must know how to take any critisism and not get all upset if we find we may not have all the answers we thought we did, it happens to all of us at times and very often it is more than differing opinions, this also need be accepted when appropriate.

I kinda doubt they were called "poor boys" back then though I can't be 100% positive. I'd also imagine these builders took as much pride in their rifles as the East Coast builders did. So it doesn't have to be crude to be a poor boy IMHO. I can see a builder adding various pieces of iron, horn, brass or bone furniture depending on what he had at hand and what the buyer wanted. There IS a certain aesthetic to a gun sans nose cap and butt plate, I'll admit.

Think Mike got it right in his description. The gun I posted is more Southern Mountain in concept. Looking forward to pics of his original....

Depending on the rest of it's features.....A good start.

Here in Maine, they were called barn rifles.

I think you should heed your words.... If I were to comment as such on everyone on this forum that didn't match my thoughts and personalty, Claude would have me in jail.

Now what is the call for a wisecrack like that? I have to agree with sniper68 and I doubt that Roy appreciates your remark either- he and Mike are always gentlemen and those who contribute as much to this Forum as Mike and Roy are pretty much beyond reproach from those who are simply looking to cause trouble.
