Lid catch spring

This is a lid spring from TOTW for a sliding wood lid. Here's the question, the tip is very thin and narrow so I don't think it was made to drill and mounted with a screw. Is it suppose to be recessed in the lid and then nailed into the square end of the slot?

That's how I did mine. I cut a groove in the lid to accomodate about 2/3 of the spring, drilled overlapping 1/16" holes in the shoulder (with a slight angle) and carefully tapped it home almost flush with the surface of the brass end-cap on the lid.
