I've been looking at how to make a powder horn. No problem there. But I do have one question. How do you fill the horn with powder? :hmm:

Thanks

I roll a small piece of paper and make a funnel and fill it from the pouring spout of the horn. I make all my horns with pinned base plugs and have staples in the plug for your strap. You can also use a very thin piece of brass sheet, found at hobby stores, and roll a funnel (lasts longer than the paper ones). :front:

I have a spout made out of a 30-30 shell caseing and it's soldered onto a screw on cap of a Goex can.Loading bp into my horn from the tip was never any easier.Makes a dandy pouring spout.

When you go to the Doctor office, get some of the little funnels he has on the wall. They are plastic funnels. Some have small holes and some have bigger holes. They are used to look in your ears. The doctor gave me a whole sleeve of them. They work great.

Generally where you purchase bp, they will have a screw on funnel cap for the powder can (cost a couple bucks). Or you can use a shell casing as mentioned above sodered to the lid of the bp can.
One easy method is to use an empty plastic container, such as a gas treatment/additive came in

I've used the funnel and/or spout systems, but wrapping my thumb and forefinger around the horn spout has proved to work quite well for me,and it's one less piece of equipmet to fool with.

Keep in mind that with plastic funnels, bottles, etc, there is a slight chance of a static buildup. Although it isn't terribly common, the result could be deadly.

Cheers,

Thanks for all the info. Thats what I thought, but ya never know.

How big of a hole do I need for a spout on the horn?

I'm the lazy one,, remember ?? This is my horn, I somke cig's also, so I put a piece of wood over the spout, Don't want a hot ash gettin close,, although it is closed any way with the valve on it,

I made a funnel out of some horn and a shell casing that I use on our horns.I also put a brass acorn plug that you can unscrew on the base plug of a couple of the horns. This makes filling them pretty easy too.

You know those litle bitty spoons they give you to put the jelly on your Egg McMuffin. You use one of those and shovel the powder in one scoop at a time until it is full!

No one has mentioned having a screw tipped horn! I'm suprised!

I fold a piece of paper lenthwise, then pour some powder on the paper, tip it up and pour it in the horn.
