Thanks, Capt. Jas, a good reference. I have that painting and have seen the pipe, before, but never quite knew what to make of it. Most art critics seem to agree that the painting is a parody...formal city dress instead of hunting garb, hat full of mushrooms, game bag including an owl among other unexpected birds, seems to have shot a donkey in the background, silly grin on his face, etc... but of course, even if that is true, that doesn't mean the gear shown isn't legit and contemporary.

The pipe even seems to have a loose pellets of shot scattered around it.

That's correct. It's a parody but the equipment certainly is not. A clearer image show's much.
