I have a problem that I just discovered with my Lyman 1858 Remmy. I haven't shot the revolver in a year or so and put it away in good order. Seems from full cock, if you fart on it, the hammer falls. A few times after noticing this, it seemed if the hammer was just falling off full cock on it's own. I measured the trigger with my triger pull gauge and it averaged 1 1/4 lbs. I don't remember it being this light. What could be causing this?

Dirt/corrosion in the sear notch or on the sear itself. It takes very little to prevent full sear engagement with the notch.

Remove the trigger and hammer and very carefully polish the end of the sear and inside the hammer notch with some fine (600 grit or finer) sandpaper. Reassemble and check your work. It may take a few attempts.

It's important not to remove too much material or the light trigger becomes permanent; you just want to get back down to the bare metal and no more. Then be sure the polished parts have a coat of oil before reassembling the last time.

Or you might want to stop Farting on it.... :nono:

Some folks like a hair trigger. This gentleman seems to prefer an "air" trigger! Aiming must be a little difficult though... :rotf:

the sear notch could be worn. the early pistols were soft. i had some we had to casr harden.

There may also be something going on with the trigger return spring not fully pushing the trigger into the sear notch.

It may be corroded from all the farting. :rotf:

Your choice of words really came back at you. You might try this "Things you never said, can not hurt you". :nono:

True, but I still haven't figured out the aiming thing. We need to get to the bottom of this before the answer falls through the cracks and we're left with just a lot of hot air. And like a passing wind, the answer will be gone forever.

Dang!!!! I'm not really farting on the gun guys. LOL!! That was just my way of saying the trigger pull was dangeriously light. It looks like the the hook on the trigger that engages the hammer is chewed up pretty bad. Anyone know where I can find a new trigger for this thing. I'm not really sure who even made the gun for Lyman. Thanks for the laughs.

I'm glad to hear that! I tried the technique and couldn't make it work very well. Once I got the trigger pull lightened up enough, the gun fired fine. But I just couldn't aim the thing! Then the neighbors called the cops on me. Not because of the shooting, but it seems the smell ruined their BBQ and their Grandmother fainted from the odor and drove her pickup into the swimming pool. Try explaining this whole thing to two cops who were late for their donut break.... :rotf:

Early Lyman Remingtons were made by Uberti. If yours is a Uberti it should have a Uberti logo (Octagon with a 'U' inside) on the barrel or frame. If Uberti, try Uberti's site for the trigger or VTI Gun Parts.

If I recall correctly most other Lyman revolvers were made by Euroarms. Can not remember at present where to get parts for Euroarms. Hopefully, another member will chime in.

Am not sure if a Uberti trigger will drop in and work in a Euroarms Remington. VTI Gun Parts may know or perhaps a member here.

I cannot seem to find the Uberti symbol on the gun. It must be a Euroarms. It looks like a copy of the Beals revolver as the barrel doen't stick out the frame, but is flush. Don't know if that helps. Has Made In Italy on one side of the Barrel, and Black Powder Only on the other side.

Although some of the things like the location of the screws in the frame are different between the makers, generally speaking the internal parts are very similar.

This results in things like the hammer, the trigger, the hand, the cylinder stop being for the most part interchangeable regardless of who made it.

Dixie Gunworks sells the trigger for the '58 Remington. Their part number for it is YP1517.

While your ordering parts from them you may want to order a new "Hand & Spring" (part number MP1725) and a "Trigger & Stop Spring" (part number TP1576).

These last two items are parts that often develop problems over time.

Here's a link to the trigger.
