I was very surprised at the condition of the stock. The fit and finish is crappy. The stock is made of European Walnut. Well the finish is horrible. It is very splotchy, uneven and looks disgusting. The metal nose cap is very loose and doesn't fit to the wood properly. And also the butt plate doesn't fit to the wood. On the top part of the butt plate that fits flush and insetted to the wood there is a gap of about 32nd of an inch.

What bothers me the most is that I have bought another Investarms gun from Cabela's, a sportized Hawken Carbine. It came in looking gorgeous. Fit and finish was very beautiful. I don't understand, why? :bull:

Has anyone else had this problem with this gun? I called Midway and they said to send it back if I wasn't happy with the product. You must admit they try to please the customer.

Needless to say I am very disappointed. I was really anxiously waiting for this gun to get started in flint lock shooting. Now I have to wait. :cursing:

Must of been a newbie on the assembly line or someone having a bad day. Sounds like your sending it back.

I have several Lyman rifles and pitol too. All of them arrived perfect.
I sent Lyman an Email a month or so ago about the complaints I have been hearing on here about the finish of their rifles as well as the poor quality of their kits recently.
They said they were not aware of any problems because customers have not been contacting them.
I would call Lyman and complain.
It's good that Midway will take care of it but Lyman needs to hear from unhappy customers so they can fix the problem internally.

To add to Hunting Dawgs last post, you might take some photos to add to that email and this thread.

---got mine about 10 yrs ago---finish on stock is slightly blotchy---a couple screws were stripped that held the plates on the forearm---kept loosing my primming powder, frizzin doesn't touch barrel,I put a leather washer as a spacer to fill the gap---works great now---

I too had problems and they were taken care of, but what bothers me is that they continue to use the old line, "no one has said anything about these problems before". It just doesn't cut it. :cursing:

Did you complain directly to Lyman or the retail supplier?

No reflection on the retailer, but often returns sit in a bin for months or years and eventually get sold off---- all without the manufacturer hearing about the problem.

In my experience and that of friends, contact directly with Lyman always results in concern for the problem on their part, followed by a quick fix. No way to promise it will happen every time, but I know of folks who were promised "hand picked" replacements, and the results were spectacular.

I'd sure go straight to Lyman, rather than simply having your vendor grab a new replacement "blind" off the rack. I'm betting Lyman will take care of you.

In the meantime, they'll have first hand evidence that they need to be tracking a potential problem with their stock.

I'd say you both come out winners that way.

I agree with folks who ask you to contact Lyman directly. Anytime you find a defective product, please call the manufacturer and give them the details. With the serial number of the gun, and other identifying information off the packing box, the company can quickly determine the date of manufacture and shipping, and this will help them with their inspections, and quality control. I don't know any company that won't make it right with you by replacing the gun, or part. The information you give them about any problems is worth many times the cost of replacing the gun or part, considering their mark ups, and the likelihood that hundreds of part made that day will also prove to be defective. The sooner they identify the source of the problems, and correct it, the better they are.

Complained to both, but hearing Lyman say they hadn't had any complaints regarding some issues I know they've heard before bothers me. Bottom line is, they worked it out to my satisfaction.

Have to agree with DAWG. I got my.54 GPR percussion about 27 years ago and it still great. When I got my .54 GPR flint kit I had two minor issues. The primitive rear sight was too small for the dove tail cut in the barrel and I received two front barrel wedges. I call Lyman customer service and they immediately sent new parts. They also wanted to know who inspected the kit. This was marked on the inside of the box lid. Lyman needs to know this information, so they can correct it and improve their quality.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have to tell ya that I was really ****** when I opened the box on this gun. I wanted to write a letter to InvestArms direct. But maybe getting with Lyman will be better. Will take note of all your suggestions and give them a call.

 I got my Lyman Deerstalker in December. Fit and finish, very good. Wood looks great. The gun shoots great. The front sight was too small-fit was too loose. I called Lyman and they sent my one right away that fit and were very nice on the phone.

"love those old guns"

Actually, now that I think about it, I remembered that there was a problem with mine. The hammer was scraping against the stock. I could have bent it, but it would also require twisting to keep the hammer nose centered over the nipple. I'm not sure if the hammer was tweaked or what. They were willing to pay the shipping, so I just returned the rifle, and they sent a new one. That one was fine, no problems with the hammer or anything else.

One tactic that just chills sellers these days is bad press in the forums. Even worse is pictures to substantiate your complaints.

If they take care of it for you, fine. If they dont, ask them to register at the forum here to read about their products.

I had many of those same fit related problems with a GPR kit. I was able to correct some but not all, but when there's too little wood it's harder to correct than when there's too much.

I guess they assembled yours from a batch of misfitting parts like they sent in my kit. Normally the GPR's are really nice rifles. You might try ordering another to see.

Take pictures for sure.

Return it to your supplier.

Have your suppler inspect the replacement to make sure it is 'perfect'.

Give them a chance to make good.

Not everybody is perfect, but, most everybody deserves a second chance.

The fit on mine was good but the stock was not what I had though it should be just about like someone shot flat black on it and it had one scrach that I had to take out other then that it was a good shooting rifle. Tom
