I also had black gooey patches that would NEVER clean out when I was using bore butter, I don't know what it's from.
It probably was left over fouling mixed with bore butter. BB won't clean out unless HOT water is used to melt it out.

I got rid of the bore butter and use crisco on patches now. cleans up alot better now. Just make sure you get the oil out before you shoot it, I use denatured alcohol.
IMHO, getting rid of the bore butter is probably the best thing you did for your ML and for accuracy.
That stuff is nothing more than colored chapstick, and it will gunk up a bore so bad accuracy will suffer badly.
I know some folks swear by it, but my experience with BB was all bad.
There are a LOT better patch lubes out there, and a LOT better bore preservatives too.
I like Breakfree for a bore preservative.
Spit, Shenandoah Valley Lube, or some such, works great for the range. Bees wax blended with olive oil, canola oil, or natural neets foot oil, works real well for hunting.
As to the location of the touch hole, higher is better, to a point.
God bless,
