Got my trade rifle today.... .54 Flint. Shot a couple "pans", stock flint and frizzen worked great. It's raining today so I may have to wait to shoot it though.

The good news is that it's raining in Colorado! Not so in most other states.

Looking forward to your shooting reports. That's going to be one fine elk smacker.

That is my favorite hunting rifle. A .54 in flint. Mine is a Cabalas Hawken but they are pretty well the same rifle. Larry

Got to shoot it indoors at my gun club! Turns out their .50 cal max rule doesn't apply to muzzleloaders. Anywho... Used .530 round ball with .015 un lubed patches (spit). Started with 60 grains of goex 2f and it shot a little low. Moved it up to 70 grains and was grouping pretty good. Only at 25 yards and on a rest, but I was amazed how accurate it was. Hi, my name is James.....and I am a Flint-a-holic!

Excellent jj. Is it a new production gun? If so, how is the fit and finish?

Pretty good. Barrel went in pretty good, bluing and brass looks nice, no blemishes. I'm very happy with it so far.

How much powder did you put in the pan? Less = more when priming. Keeping it below the touch hole will give faster ignition as the prime doesn't have to burn into the main charge. The heat wave from the flash does it faster. "Chick-a-boom" is too slow. Should just go Boom. BTW nice rifle.

Gotcha, thanks! Didn't have a pan primer and was trying to measure out about 3 grains but wasn't too accurate. Thanks!

Well, having problems with stock agate flint and touch hole fouling. Had to take out the touch hole and clean it twice today for about 8 shots.

Some people roll the gun to its side as they raise it, to ensure that the vent hole is clear.

The RMC liner made a big difference in my Deerstalker, the agates work ok in mine if I keep the lock clean. I haven't shot mine much yet but it's definitely a shooter. I like my Lyman a lot and sure you will as well.

I have to make sure the barrel powder gets up to the vent when I load mine and I do that with a few pumps of a patch before I load the barrel and check with a pick.

You shouldn't have to remove the touch hole liner, ever. Straighten out a large paper clip, and poke the end through the hole to clean. Sticking the tip just inside the opening and working it around at different angles will allow you to punch out even more fouling. Point the muzzle down and shake out any chunks that may have been dislodged. A breech plug scraper is a very useful accessory as well. Just be sure it is of bore diameter and that the scraping surface matches the contour of your breech plug ( flat vs. concave ).

Lotta guys drill out their stock liners to slightly larger with a specific size of drill. Haven't done it myself, but lots of positive results reported.

Anyone help with the drill bit size?

And yea. Plugging the vent while loading is your friend. Some guys use wire, some use feathers, and others like me use round toothpicks.

If humidity is higher and you're getting lots of fouling in the pan and around the vent, wiping between shots is good too.
