Made some meat

Broke in my rifle yesterday with a nice 8 point and a button buck on a second tag. I used 90 gr of FF with a bear greased patch. The buck was a broadside 20 yard shot, shot through both lungs it piled up within 35 yards. The button buck was a slight quatering away 50 yard shot, shot through both lungs and just touched the far shoulder, it dropped where it stood.

Unfortunatly I found long rifles to be, not to disabled friendly. Trying to move inside a blind to get into postion it's weight and length made it difficult and trying to use a pair of cross sticks was one major hassle. Not to mention the fact that loading this thing is no easy task. I'll continue to use it this year but I really need to look into a "short rifle" if I'm gonna continue to play with flinters.

i agree with huntingfool, making loading easer is how we got these new fangled center fires

Well done young fellow! That is a fine trophy, and one to be proud of for sure. I wouldn't switch rifles for no man nor money! Like Pike Co. Bob, my son and I will be heading north tonight for the opener of PA's early muzzleloader season. We'll be totin' our flintlock long guns because we just can't feel comfortable with a laminated-stocked, thumb-holed, high power-scoped, jacketed-bullet shootin' inline, but that's just our opinion. Enjoy each day.

Great job, Swamp Rat! To everyone else gearing up for the early ML season here in PA, good luck and be safe! Don't let the threat of a little rain dampen your spirits. My 14 y/o is chompin' at the bit. I handed down my very first flintlock to him, one I got for Christmas in 1979. He used it last year, but wasn't able to get in any shooting. I'm hoping that changes tomorrow! Once he gets a lungful of that acrid white smoke, there'll be no stoppin' the boy! ::

I hope everyones powder stays dry and the hunting gods watch over yer shoulders.

I really need to look into a "short rifle", something on the lines of a English gentlemans rifle really appeals to me. A 30 to 32" barrel is right in my comfort zone. I can look at and see the muzzle while loading. Leverage for loading is no problem and I can do it myself, with no help. It's lighter weight and length would make it much, much more managable for me. Not to mention, givin me another winter project...hmm

Congratulations on a great deer hunt. Whether you need a new rifle or not, you done a great job. I hope I have half as much luck as you did. I have been looking at that PA Pellet flintlock. I know it is not a "traditional" rifle but it sure looks like a lot of fun.

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm all set when it comes to cap guns. Just need to figure out the right flinter, of which I think I have. I don't want to say to much right now but with the help and guidance of another member here, it looks like I'll have the perfect winter project! And I'm excited cause I think it will be the perfect rifle for me. :thumbsup:

Nice buck sounds like your off to a good start. Maybe you would like a Jaeger rifle with a 32" barrel ? Good luck finding the right peice!

Getting ready for our Doe only week that starts tomorrow. Went and checked on my spot then took the 1792 rifle out to see just what I'm getting into. This should prove interesting to say the least. Not to sure just how to transport the rifle in and out of the woods without dinging it all up but I'll figure somethin out before morning. It's definately a handful while sitting up there on my stand but should be more managable than when I was in the blind, due to the swivel seat and no need for cross sticks.
