This years bear oil that is. First time I decided to try a Crock Pot, which worked just fine. The jars have only had a few days to settle and are doing so nicely.

How long does bear oil keep? Do you refrigerate it? Do you use it for patching or cooking? Just curious. Thanks.

I still have some rendered by a friend around 2000 and some from my first rendering 2005. I keep it sealed at room temp here which for most of the year doesn't get over 70 degrees except for the dead of winter when I really put the wood to the stove and this place gets up to 80. :haha: It is used for cooking by some but I just use it to lube my flintlocks and making patch grease myself.

Btw, not sure why the flash shows that amber color but the oil isn't, the color is more like the last jar on the right in that pic.

Looks good. I rendered bear oil a few years ago in a crockpot.. Its been in temps over 90 and below freezing still looks the same. Clouds up when its cold, but goes back to looking transparent. Hasn't spoiled yet.

I love to use bear oil to lube my locks and barrels after cleaning. Never thought about a crock pot though so you got a new one on me Swampy :hatsoff:

Swampy
Is the 'clear' part on top the good stuff [oil] and if so......what is the white part [at the botton] and what do you do with it?

Yep, thats what we are after, bear oil. The remaining lard can be used as well and will be but the oil is what I want and will be drawn off and bottled till I need it.

I use it as a lube for my flintlocks and make patch lube with it too. I keep myself and a half dozen guys well stocked in it.

Thank you Sir. Wish we had a bear or 3 around here. So I guess no bear oil for me.

Swampy,
Googled "bear oil" found a site offering it for $14 an ounce plus S&H.Tad higher than what I use,
but worth it,if it works.I still use stumpkiller's
moose snot and moose juice. But I do stray from it, from time to time. But it is my go to stuff.Just an opinion.

I'm one of the lucky ones Swampy sends to :hatsoff: ,,the oil is great, and the grease I use for patch lube hunting season..actually use both during hunting season only,,,I use spit patches at the shoots but fer huntin,,cannot beat this stuff, no worries about lock.....an with a lil deer tallow added in,,patches work awesome! looks great Swampy!!!

How long does it take to cook in a crock pot ?

And do you think domestic pig fat would give you the same kind of end product ?

Just a suggestion: If you heat up the bear " Lard" to make it liquid, and then filter it through coffee filters- those paper/cotton off- white filters sold for coffee pots--while still hot, you should be able to get more oil out of the lard. At $14.00 per oz. it might be worth trying?? :shocked2: :hmm:

Hey Swampy, next thing I'm gonna try is running it thru a grinder instead of cutting it up.Might be this fall if the butcher get some bear.

As it is now, its been filtered twice. You might notice a slight difference in color with that biggest jar in the center from the ones just to its sides. That big jar will probably end up with 90% or better oil in it. Through the whole process of rendering over 3 days whenever I saw oil I drew it off and put it in that jar and kept replacing what I took from the smaller jars with newer oil from the pot. So it will be interesting what that jar looks like in a couple of weeks or so.

410, I put the deer tallow through a grind and man that makes a big difference, able to render that in just a couple of hours! I keep threatening to grind bear but just haven't done it yet. I'm sure it will make a difference.

I had enough to fill the 7 quart pot up twice Kevin and set on "Warm" I went into the 4th day before I was done with it.

Has anyone ever tried to render raccoon fat to make oil? How would this be for oil?............watch yer top knot............
