I looked at my Pietta 1851 Navy today to get an idea of how far the loading plunger goes into the cylinder. It goes in about 15/32. Just about a half inch. The total depth of the cylinder is 1 1/4 inches so the plunger goes in less than half way.
Now I have to see what will be the best load combo. I planned to start with 20 grains of 3f Goex, 1/8" felt wad and roundball or 200 grain Lee revolver conical.

I've never fired this revolver, it's my first so I want to do it right.

I'd work with the balls first. Getting the conicals to shoot well can be a real bear. They are difficult to seat straight and most folks find the ball loads more accurate anyway.
