Who uses Mink Oil from totw ,what do you think of it for both hot and cold weather use?Shifty

Mink oil works great on boots or moccasins. Don't know as I'd use it on anything else.

I personally am only using the TOW mink oil for cccccold (below 25 degrees-F) and dry BP shooting. I will tell you, I was at a BP shoot in northern Vermont when it was so cold and dry that people were breaking ramrods ALL over the place, I myself broke 2 :shocked2: !

'Master Blaster', aka Big John, who posts here, was kind enough to give me some TOW mink oil and it was slick! It was so slick I could load my normal load with even bending the ramrod and accuracy was maintained  ! I could even get off 3 or 4 shots without wiping the bore. I believe that the amount of mink oil TOW sells you for $5 is a Best Buy, IMHO.

Otherwise I've been using patches of 100% cotton Homespun damp with Hoppe's BP Patch Lube or 100% wool wads over the pwder under the ball (dryball) and a milk carton card over the ball.

I've used it in hot weather at the range for a " patch dip" . You get good accuracy, and a lot of shots between cleaning. Best to use in cooler climates than Okahoma! There's a lot of pach lube recipes here on the forum that are just as good.

I just bought a pair of elkskin mocs from john macaddams of "visions of the past".. he strongly advised against using mink oil on leather..or anything with animal fat in it,something about protien rotting the leather..just what i heard and i trust him! RC

I use TOW mink "oil" [it is really a grease/tallow]. I use it both for patch lube and to coat my bore after cleaning. The old timers used tallow exclusively, typically bear grease, which I have trouble finding, so I went to mink grease. [I also use commercial bore butter, Lehigh Valley lube and spit at various times]

I should clarify that TOW mink oil is my cccccold weather lube of choice, otherwise I use the other 2 options posted. Of those 2, 1 loads faster than the other, but if you can believe it ... the 'dryball' load in my flint smoothie is the more accurate loading.

I have use it for some time now and get great accuracy with it, inch and a half five shot groups at 100 yrds no matter the weather conditions.
I switched to elk tallow mixed with marmot oil because it is my own recipt and get equal accuracy.

I have been using it for several years now, hot weather or cold. I don't seem to get a fouling ring above the ball like I do with a spit patch. Seems to keep the fouling softer and easier to clean out too. flinch

bin usein it for 3years as a patch lube tride it mixed with lanolin grease even better good mini ball lube aswell.
bernie

I tryed mink oil boot dressing as patch lube (it was sold as boot dressing) and other animal grease such as bear fat and deer fat and other oil type lubes until I thought to try what I use now and had on hand since I'm a mechanic - it's Go-Jo white hand cleaner. Good patch lube and field cleaner/wipe down. of course once I'm home I do the boiling water with soap thing. camped out I use hot water heated in my coffee pot if I have shot much, to soak the bore that is. lots of different opinions on this.

Just remember boys & girls, there are TWO types of 'mink oil'. The stuff for shoes is different than the similarly named oil for patch lube.

For sure...much of the stuff labeled Mink Oil for leather is really a petroleum product. True Mink Oil is available. The TOW marketed stuff is a grease, not liquid at normal room temps. It is real Mink tallow.

I have used it in hot weather so far and it works great. I have shot over 50 shots in a row using Mink Oil without wiping between shots and have had NO problems loading.
