May have posted this before if so ignore and accept apologies - but don't remember if I did.
Subject - Coating of mls and cap and ball pistols with black powder residue after shooting.
Does any one know of any substance to coat parts - outside -
of the metalic parts to prevent or make for easier cleaning
of the ml/cap&ball ml?
Don't waste your time and space telling me about the various methods for cleaning ml after firing as I already know and have probably
tried most methods and that is not the question.
There is one company that will take cap and ball revolvers and apply a permanent coating - don't want to spend an additional $95-100+ for the service. And have had no feed back on this type of product and the pros/cons.
I thought that polishing the metalic parts to a smooth near mirror finish may help in that there would be not the rough surfaces for the residue to attach to and/or make for easier clean up.
Any thoughts on the subject?
Thanks
Doc

I agree with stumpkiller... I happened upon this by accident as I wiped a good amount of beezwax into the gaps between the wood and metal, around the breach end of the barrel..I figured any fouling would not pass under the barrel and rust... I hate pulling guns apart too often... I coated the underside of the barrel and the stock with beeswax...figuring on a protective film??
Now I tend to swear a light coat of wax over the metal..I guess it might burn as you fire... but seems to clean up nicely when the shooting is done.

Thanks for the input.
Tried the wax - sort of and it did help.
What I did use was a combination of beeswax, paraffin, and lanoline. The same that I use to lub my wads.
What I also did - and this was on a cap and ball revolver - was to first to polish the part to mirror bright finish where the residue sticks. I thought that this would not permit the residue to stick as much as a rougher surface and so far it turns out that I was right as clean up was a snap compared to the original surface.
Thanks again.
