I just picked this up and am looking for help on identification. I bought it assuming it is just a very abused reproduction. But I thought I should ask for advice before I start aggressively cleaning.

I have done nothing except spray the blade with oil and wipe it with a rag. I have not located any markings, but I don’t know where to look, and they could be hidden by rust (excuse me , patina)
If real where would any markings be located?

Thanks in advance for any help.

More people have been ripped off/misled about the history and authenticity of swords than any other military collectible item with possible exceptions of WWII German uniform insignia and ceremonial daggers.
I assume any purportedly antique sword I see as a reproduction or fake unless EXTENSIVELY DOCUMENTED by someone reputable who really knows their stuff about swords.
I am no expert, but my WAG is that the sword pictured above is a reproduction, possible artificially aged.
However, I could be wrong.

Looking at the fabric on the grip alone, I'd agree that it's a very abused reproduction.
I bought it assuming it was a reproduction. Would an original be marked on the blade near the grip?

I follow the same procedure whenever buying a collectible that I do not have a depth of knowledge of, assume it’s fake and pay accordingly. I have $57 in this one. I just didn’t want to start extensive cleaning on the off chance it might be real. I assume all origin CW swords would have some type of markings on the blade, do you have any information on this?

Thank you for your reply.
