Anyone here from Montana? How is the hunting with a muzzleloader? I have heard that there are some long shots due to the wide open spaces. I am thinking of relocating out west and am considering Montana. What species are avalible to hunt without a drawing? Which animals are in for drawings?

This is an awesome place to live and hunt. You will take longer shots in Eastern Montana as it is lots of rolling hills and plains. In western Montana (where I live), rarely do I ever need to take a shot over 50 yards. I hunt almost exclusively with a muzzleloader and there are many non-game animals that can be hunted without a tag (squirrels, rabbits, porcupines etc) year round. You can buy deer, elk, and antelope over the counter, and you draw for sheep, moose and anterless deer & cow elk (depending on the area). 5 weeks of rifle season, archery starts the first sunday in September and ends in dec/jan. Grouse opens September 1 and we also have a spring/fall turkey. Occasinally there are drawings for buffalo. Link to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks http://fwp.mt.gov/default.html

I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have, if I can.

I think I would like to live in Montana some day!!! Although Colorado is a good place to live to!

to add to what Black Hand said:

There are a few areas around that are restricted to archery, shotgun, MUZZLELOADER or handgun hunting, but, unlike some other states, there is no muzzleloader only season. That means we are out there with the 7-em em shooters and their brethren.
If you want to HUNT, them long shots are a matter of perspective. I have taken 1 antelope and several mule deer on the open grassland with a patched roundball and a long shot is 100 yards or so.
If you have the time (and the $$$$) there are still surplus deer and antelope tags available for over the counter sales. Check out the links to FWP given above.
