This is my first attempt at making moose milk for patch lube - after mixing ingredients as listed in Stumpy's posts, castor oil refuses to go into solution. Does this stuff need to be dissolved in the alcohol prior to adding water, or is this normal? I've shaken it up pretty good but there's still a big layer of oil on top, which would make it hard to get proper consistency on the patches, I would think. :thanks:

That's is what I found out too, I put the caster oil into the alcohol then put the witch hazel into that mix added the murphy oil soap and mixed then put it in the water. Mine is still mixed with no oil on the top.
Works good too. :hatsoff:

Yep. Castor oil does not mix with water, but it does with alcohol; which then allows it to mix with water. I start with the alcohol, then add the oils, and the water is last. Adding the Murphy's before the witch hazel also seems to help bind them better.

If it sits a few minutes some ingredients will seperate regardless, so you need to shake it up every time you use or transfer it to smaller containers.

Several of the commercial blackpowder solvents are the same way (T/C #13, etc.)

Thank you, gentlemen. Did it that way and it worked fine this time. I'll have to make that a "note to self" for next time I mix some up.
