I may qualify as mountain folk. Was born and raised down in the east-central area of Kentucky near where Casey, Adair, and Taylor counties meet. The landscape there consists primarily of the western ripples of the Appalachian foothills. Near as I've been able to determine, my dad's side of the family settled in this area somewhere around 1780 after a time spent in Lancaster County, Virginia. My mom's side of the family was far more mountain-ish in nature. They all seemed to live off-grid and there are hardly any records of their ever having been here! Neither my maternal grandmother and grandfather seem to be listed in any tax records, birth or death databases, or anything like that, so tracing the family history has been mostly fruitless. My great grandmother died when I was in fourth grade in 1974 without ever having indoor plumbing, running water, or anything beyond a wood stove to cook with. She was definitely mountain folk.
I've been hunting almost exclusively with flintlocks for nigh on twenty years now and in all that time have found only a couple of other guys who like to mess around with them a bit. Haven't found another soul interested in historical trekking or extended scouts, though.
