Thanks Boomm.

Ahh gezz, here we go.
Anyway, I would recommend either a Lyman GPR or a TC.
You're going to get many replies. Folks here have varying opinions, and will let you know for sure.

I think it depends on what you are in to. Just shooting, hunting, reenacting...

Ditto

If you want to go with mass produced production rifle My advice is to stay away from the cheap stuff. T.C or Lyman GPR are good rifles. Or you may think about custom built. Siler, L&R and R.E. Davis make the best locks.

Just shooting for fun, and the club shoot. . Boomm.

If you're handy you can build a really nice one. Someone in your club probably builds rifles and would love to help you.

Otherwise, you'll be buying a gun. What's your price range and how long do you want to wait?

Friendship is happening this weekend - if you're anywhere near Cincinnati/Louisville/Indianapolis it's an easy drive. You'll be able to choose from lots of finished guns (take someone experienced to check them out.)

Otherwise, there are good factory rifles out there. Consider .32, .36, or .40 caliber for plinking. They're cheaper to shoot

I've owned the T/C but have had no experience with the GPR. The Lyman GPR seems to be the best dollar value, however. They also have a good reputation.

Well i am to far to make friendship, but would love to go.I would like to keep to 50 cal, there is a guy in our club, but his custom rifles are
not cheap, but they are top of the line.
Maybe a lyman GPR to start with, one of our
shooters last week had a lyman F/L it was a nice
looking rifle, and he said it shoots well out of the box, he was happy with it, the more i see a F/L in action the more i want one. I will wait till i can afored a top notch rifle. thanks Boomm.

wow! this is hard! well a lyman gpr was my first! and i still love that rifle. ive up graded the trigger, and im waiting on my L&R lock. but shes my first and will say nothing bad! if you go with a 50 cal gpr you will fall in love also! but there is something to be said for the customs also. and there are places where you can get one for about $1100

Work has been slow for the past year, so something
like $1100 would be like a million right now. :(
Thanks Boomm.

Thegunsource(company name) have Great Plains rifles for 486.99. That's the lowest price I've seen on 'em. Got me a .50cal flinter Saturday and they said they had three left. It's Friendship or bust for me on Saturday morning. It's only about 90 miles from here(Louisville)

Reddog,
I feel your pain. I am looking for a pistol (Boomm, I too am under dollar restraints) and will be at Friendship to find my treasure!! Hopefully the search will find gold at Friendship.

Boomm,
get what you can afford and listen to the advice about the Lyman. Shooting companion here has one and it is pretty darn accurate.

Cheers, Don

Take a short stroll through the Classifieds - Auctions forum on this board. There's a couple of nice used flintlock rifles (one Pedersoli and one Thompson Center, both of which are excellent brands) available at good prices. I don't know either of the sellers.

Personally, I have a Lyman GPR .54 flintlock and am very pleased with it, but both of the rifles in the Classifieds have good reputations.

A good "Flintlock" is a lot of fun, a bad one, can and will turn you off from muzzleloading.
A friend just yesterday said" Oh, those flintlocks arn't very reliable, I saw one once, it would never fire" You can see his confidence in a "clatchlock"
So, if you can put the dollars up for a Lyman, or a TC, you will be pleased.

If I were in your position and know what I know now, I would buy the Lyman GPR. Although my favorite gun is a Thompson Center 50 cal Hawken. The Lyman is a good gun. Just slight tweaking will make it a great gun!

Woohooo! Me too. I'm in Fern Creek. I'll be up there Saturday and likely buy a kit.

I recommend a roundball twist rate. 48" is good and works ok but the 60" of the GPR is better.

Whatever you choose, read and heed the advice in the item at the top of this forum. It is required for reliable operation
