I`ve owned both Thompsons and Lymans and for me the lyman GPR seemed to fit me better..I`d go with the Lyman

Nothing wrong with Lymans or Thompsons if you just want to shoot. Some turn their noses up at them but they are still fun to shoot and they do shoot well. My first was a Pedersoli kentucky which was not historicly correct at all but it shot really well. I think it was $375 new but that was like 20 years ago.

I get a ton of gratafication out of shooting tiny groups with sub-$100.00 rifles. Not so long ago I built a flintlock T/C Hawken with a new GM 1:66" barrel and after selling the surplus parts I had a free gun and $18.00 cash.

Just did a similar deal where I ended up with a nice 1:28 GM barrel for free and $50.00 cash.

Just buy a used gun and shoot and learn. If you buy a thompson if anything is wrong they will fix it no charge, kind of tips scales in tc's favor.Learn now, upgrade later! Sorry meant to reply to boom.

Do you have more time than money? Are you a bit handy and are willing to learn? Like to research guns to figure what you want? Do you like to shop on the internet or catalogs? If you do, build your own. You don't have to buy everything at once or from the same source. And you can try your hand at making a few parts. Start with barrel and install the sights and underlugs. Get the stock later and then put the two together. Get the lock and install it. Purchase the other parts as money comes available. I did two builds this way, but they took me a couple years each doing it this way, mostly due to money constraints. Takes a bit of planning and vision. But if you gotta have it now, well I guess this won't be an option. (Sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch, I ain't selling nothing.)

OK black powder pards.
Smooth thats sounds like a good idear one bit at a time, and i appreciate all my friends on this forum for there knowlegable advice, i think i might keep saveing for a custom F/L and then i am
sure i will be happy with what i have bouht, and its not like i do not have a muzzleloader to shoot. SO thanks again for all the advice and the
tips. . Boomm.

Excellant choice, I waited 2 years b4 I bought my first flinter. It was a used fowler in 20 ga/.62.Used that another 2 years while I decided on what kind of rifle I wanted, finally realized that I just couldn't stomach a full blown custom gun so i ordered up a couple books and scratch built a .40 for my wife and have built 2 more since. This weekend I'm visiting with my father -in-law and he's going to have me build one for him, gonna haggle on options and choices available. :hatsoff:
