i made mine a little heavy duty with a foot rest on the bottom to anchor it down fer carving or stand on one of the feet at the corners to do the samething....the working height of the rifle on the level is 42"....the tool bin to hold what ever tools i'll need at the time of what job is at hand then....the rubber strap is held down on one end with a 2" deck screw and the other end just slips over a 6-D finishing nail to hold down the gun....the foot rest was mortised into the upright posts fer strengh....the blocks in the bottom of my clamp are (1) 3/4", (2) 1/2" and i have (3) 1/4" pieces of a paint stirring stick from home depot to take up any other gaps fer clamping any thickness rifle part :v ...........bob

Glad I could help ya Bob. That's one fine work stand, and the best lookin full-stock Hawkin I ever seen. :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: Nice modifications to my plans. Yeah, I know it's a Virginia, er Kentucky, ah Pennsy riflegun. Wish I could get back to mine, but the wife's been very sick. This and the other M/L site I visit is what's been keepin me sane!

Bill

I started with nothing, and still have most of it left!

Damm you do fine work, and the rifle looks good to!! Now make one for the rest of us, or draw up some plans. :hmm: I could use a little help in the wood department, I worked all my life in iron, and don't even know what wood looks like!! My wife says the only thing I do well is make noise!! :(

anyone needs a set of measured plans PT me and i'll git them to ya after i draw some up in a day or 2  :v ...............bob

Here's what the original looked like, and some of the mod's. It really dosen't replace a full bench, but is fantastic for a lot of jobs, and for cleaning, and is light enough to take to the range.

In addition a couple of recomendations not in the pic's. First make the stand taller, maybe 40"or 44". This will let you stand straighter while working. next add triagular gussets beneath the shelves this will make it stronger, make them about 3 1/2" on the two equal sides. Hope this helps.

1--1x4x8'
2--1x2x8'

Im inspired also.
Just ordered a laser drill press from sears.
I think the gun vise wil be my nexy project.

Nice looking piece of furniture and I certainly would want something like it for "light duty" gun work. Seeing I have a very heavy hand, my well constructed gun building bench is screwed both to the wall and floor and a Starrett toolmakers vise completes my need for a stable, non-moving platform. The "bench" pictured will be a fine addition to my workshop.....thanks....Fred

i liked the one bill of the 45th posted but it looked a little on the light side to me....so i used a 2 x 10 ripped down to 8 1/4" wide and 1 x 4 to help keep it square and hold what ever in the built in bin, i always put my tools away after a project anyway....it stands there pretty sturding by itself but when i stand on one of the corner feet or the foot rest stretcher on the bottom it don't move at all :v .............bob

Both Great looking benchs. I will be starting mine this coming weekend using your photos and recommmendaions by Bill of the 45th Parallel. Thanks for the information here.
