My Kibler SMR arrived today

I ordered the 36. caliber in an upgraded walnut stock that was posted on there sight. The photos didn't look that special but I knew it would be nice if they upgraded it and I was not let down.

I almost bought that one but chickened out on the grain direction. The tang and trigger plate design will make up for it in the wrist and a toe plate might be in order, and I'm not super crazy about toe plates. That grain pattern is really nice, your gain! I look forward to seeing this one finished.

I just got a flintlock. The only marking I can find is Japan 74-36, no-cal, or maker. It comes from an estate rif;e_files

This one will definitely have a toe plate everything else is up in the air.

Looks great. The right stain will bring out the fiddleback. Is the barrel "swamped" or is it just the angle of the photo?

I used Watco Danish oil finish on my T/C walnut stocks.

This is not advice, I don't give advice, but . . . . if it was mine . . . . I would stain the wood with a medium red/brown pure spirit stain (not fence stain) then buff it right back with fine steel wool. Then apply your preferred oil finish. That way the fiddleback in the grain will absorb and retain a slightly darker appearance and be highlighted. But it's not mine so good luck with whatever you decide. A few phots of the finished item would be great in due course.

Wow, that walnut looks magnificent. I've got an SMR .45 cal in walnut ordered and I'd be just tickled if mine's that nice.

I've been progressing very slowly. I did get it assembled but have to think on how far to go with this one. I knew I wanted to do at least an inlay or two so I cast some silver and carved out my first. As much as I want to do some more serious carving I am feeling this SMR will be pretty enough with just the wood as it is.

It may need a little more work before I install it but I am pretty happy with it .

Thank's that is my plan now. I am going to add a toe plate and maybe another inlay but then I can just get to finishing.

I'm just trying to learn. Is this because it would not be historically correct for this type rifle? The reason I ask is I'm close to ordering a Kibler Woodsrunner and am trying to decide if I want to get the carved version.
