Okay, so I had to make up for my first attempt at reclaiming leather: wife's old purse link
This one I made from an old leather coat I had hanging in the closet. The straps aren't really attached--I'm still looking for some strap leather. Any ideas would be appreciated. The exterior pocket was an original part of the coat, and I decided to use it. The pouch is 9" wide by 9.5" tall. It took me a very long day to make.

You have a bright future, Grasshopper!

Great use of recycled leather. Gotta say you had a better coat in your closet than any I've seen in 2nd hand stores. Good score, and good job.

looks good and will probably look better as it ages. for a leather strap maybe a simple 3 plat braid of boot lace or a girth strap??

Thanks BrownB. The coat was a leather dress coat circa 1970, made in Spain. I bought it in a garage sale for $10 when I was in college.

Thanks Creek. I'm thinking about aging it--at least taking the shine off it. I wonder if boot lace can be had long enough. Girth strap as in for a horse?

Rifleman,
I think that is the way to go--if I can find a "girthy" man's belt  I'd need two of my size to work.

DoubleD,
You're too kind!

Looks a bunch better than the first bag! __ A nice hemp or cotton strap who also look good!

Rick :hatsoff:
Thanks! I know the style you're talking about, but I'm not a big fan. It's like mixing brick and stucco on a home. Some like it, but I prefer all brick or all stucco.

Nice job. The strap that you have is not bad if you can't find enough matching leather to make a simple flat strap. Another idea that many folks use is to make or buy a woven strap like would be used on a powder horn. Look up "Inkle Loom" and see how to make and use one. They are simple to make and easy and fun to use. Then you can make all the straps and sashes you wish. If you don't want to make your own, there are almost always horn/bag straps and sashes for sale on the forum sale ads. There's an example on this bag http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/pp-classifieds/showproduct.php/product/10133/cat/13

Thanks. I would just use that belt, but it is too short. I'll probably go to some thrift stores and look for a longer one.

Or one in my size!..."Hey, lady, do these come in 'Huskies'!"

Nice bag too, by-the-by!

Hey that looks like my wife's old purse! :shocked2: Sorry couldn't resist! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Seriously I have to give you E for Effort, you are getting good at this re-purposing!

One thing for sure, after a while you're going to end up with about ninetyleven bags. Each new bag will incorporate new ideas, materials and features, whether historical or brainstorms.

Whatcha gonna do with them all? :rotf:

I pass some along to newcomers, but a lot end up hanging on pegs at home. End goal is a bag for each gun, but even those keep "evolving" as a new one replaces an old.

BB, I don't know how many bags I'll end up making, but my 19-yo daughter wants the first one for a purse! She likes what I did with it  :surrender:
This second one will likely be my fowling bag for my new (old) Pietta Navy Arms shotgun: See my new (old) S/S shotgun
