Might as well post here.
Had my jug cookin for 4 weeks. Same vinegar, way more rusty nails and chain. Looked good; very dark, 1/2" foamy slather on top. When strained out the remaining liquid was light tan/ginger colored, which separates to near transparency very quickly. Tried it on various woods [steel wooled and oiled], none of which looked anything like what I wanted. Did I miss somethin? .....Longshot

Oiled? You don't want to stain wood that's oiled... the oil will prevent the wood from taking the stain. The stain should be applied to raw untreated wood prior to any oiling.

the first jar from the left has 30 grs of brass....the second jar has 30 grs of bolts....the 3 third has 30 grs old fence wire....the fourth has 30 grs of some rusted common nails....

the fifth jar has 30 grs of unknown iron....the sixth jar has 30 grs of cast iron pipe....the seventh jar has 30 grs of old cut nails the tapered flat ones....the eighth jar has 30 grs of old rusted metal banding strips....and all jars have 4 ozs of vinager to start with....

so far i can see through some jars with a flashlight behind them and others i can't....the jar with the brass hasn't changed yet and i think ghost said something bout brass that it came out with a unique color so i tried that....as of today after 5 days the foaming has stopped so i added another 2 ozs of vinager to help out with the rest of the metal to dissolve....will keep ya updated..................bob

We use vinegar to clean the tools in our lab, (I'm a quality control technician at a concrete company), most of the tools we stick in the vinegar are either plated steel or aluminum, I've noticed that after a few weeks the vinegar (we use white) is bright red in color, not sure what causes it to turn, but I don't think it's always rust. I'll have to try some of the vinegar from the pail to stain a scrap of maple and see what happens.

Longshot,
I cant really say what happend, other then when mine was about 4 weeks old I spooned out the unmelted pieces, rather then straining it.. in fact when I used it I would shake it up and use it while everything was suspended, I applied several very liberal coats, and then lightly sanded before I oiled it ...might be straining it made the difference... :m2c:

Used two variations of the vinegar stain one made with vinegar and a dissolved steel wool pad, result was a nice chocolate brown (faux stripes) the other was a mixture of barb wire and rebar (rebar mix was about 3 months old). The two mixes barbwire, and steel wool (degreased) sat and "cooked" for about 6 weeks (added a bit of vinegar about once a week to keep it going). The barb wire/rebar mix resulted in a light amber color, one coat only. The lighter color was applied over the darker faux stripe. 3 coats of hand rubbed tru oil and one coat of Johnson's paste wax.

Longshot47,

I had the same results as you. I used a 12 ounce bottle (IIRC) of cider vinegar and a bunch of small scrap pieces of steel. It has been brewing for about a month and a half now. I decided to try it out on a scrap piece of maple I have and it looks terrible. Almost looks like I put mud on the wood. It is a fairly light brown / tan color with no hint of red at all.

Not all of the steel has dissolved but there foaming seems to have stopped. I figured I'd try adding some more vinegar to the mix and see what happens.

#4 looks real good. I was wondering what the vinegar stain would look like on a nice piece of Maple. I have used it on several cheaper kits ("Select Hardwoods" what ever that means).

hey bob i love number 4 also try it on the edge of your boards theres more curl there because that would be considered quatersawn and the grain there would really pop out and it would represent the the curl on the top and bottom of your rifle. just look at the pics of your other rifle when you hold the bottom of the rifle out the curl from the toe to the trigger guard is just awesome problem is there are not a lot of logs that are large enough to be quatersawn. well thanks for the pics and info thats what i love about this forum peaple are sure willing to help everybody out :redthumb:

Very nice, I like #4 or #7. Did that wood come from your stock? Can you be sure your stock will look like the samples?

yes they are pieces of my stock i ordered from pecatonica river....and yes it is grade 4 maple....i asked them to send all cut offs from my stock fer stain samples....the way i cut these samples and stained them is the sides that are stained are going to be the sides of the rifle if ya look at it hanging on the wall....i just didn't fine finish them like i would be finishing the stock....i did wisker them and sand them but not to the smooth smooth finish i will the stock and this is what i came up with....so just think what the stock will look like when i'm done with it :hmm: ....i kept notes on what and how much i used in what stain so will be able to copy it to what my samples are....the piece of tape on the jars have all the info on it..................bob

here's a picture of all the scrape stock pieces that came with my stock....there's 4 pieces of one shape that i cut out of one part and 4 of the other....the long flat piece is 38" x 2" fer some bullet blocks or knife handles later or what ever triggers my fancy..................bob
