I was very fortunate today to acquire 5 new old stock unopened tins of percussion caps. Not the ones I was looking for, but I could not pass up the deal.

I hope you have good luck with them . I purchased those same caps from Navy Arms about 35 years ago and at that time only about half of them were any good:(.

I bought a bunch of these from Navy Arms back in 1963. The musket size tins are labeled "Winged Musket Caps" and sold then for $1 for 100. I still have a few and they still fire reliably as of last month. Their "pistol caps" back then were $.75 per hundred. Unfortunately I used all them up on an original Remington New Model and an old half stock rifle....... I bet your unopened caps will still be viable

I bet they would fire also. I have plenty of new caps to use, so I bought these really just for my collection. At 4$ a tin of 100, it was a deal to me for a little history.

Was just given an unopened new old stock can of Navy Arms Co Winged musket caps, cat # ACM-100.
I’ve never seen these style/kind of caps before. Are these what I hear reference to 209’s? Or what are these for. Certainly too large for my nipple on my musket. I use exclusively, CCI #11

Do you really have a musket? Almost all of the true military muskets that are caplocks use the larger caps. Some were not winged back in the day but I think they all are now. 209's are modern primers for modern muzzleloaders and shotguns

Are you saying 11’s are not for Muskets. Getting a little frustrated learning the hard way. My musket was missing the nipple. Ordered several, one to install and a few backups. Turned out to be wrong thread size. Ordered new with correct thread size, and for #11 caps. Are you saying I ordered wrong again? That muskets don’t use #11 caps? Is this a SNAFU?

Do you have #11 caps? If so try them

So here’s a chart for those that don’t know the difference dimension wise. As you can see, the diameter of a #11 is much smaller than a winged cap. A larger diameter nipple for the winged caps only makes sense to me for a snugger fit. For those that use winged caps, do you use a better fitting nipple? Or do you just do a hail Mary hopping it doesn’t fall off.

I know it is frustrating but let me try to explain. The 5/16 28 thds are standard for a musket. The European size would be close to that but not interchangeable. The 5/16 28 nipples that fit a # 11 cap are not the standard for muskets. They may work. If you have them try them. If they work OK. I used the nipples like you have to repair rifles when customers buggered the smaller standard size hole that the nipple goes into. You could also try to exchange the nipples you have for proper musket nipples if in fact you have a musket. A picture would be helpful.

You completely miss understand. I’m not discussing nipple thread size. I’m discussing nipple diameter vs cap diameter fit, specifically, and specifically regarding the winged percussion caps.
Please go to My Unknown Rifle Journey thread for pics and greater detail.

The Hail Mary approach hoping the winged musket cap doesn’t fall off a #11 nipple is a silly idea at best.

#11 percussion caps and winged musket caps are NOT interchangeable. They each work with different size nipples that match the ID of cap.

You can swap out a winged musket cap nipple with a #11 percussion cap nipple provided they both match the threads in the bolster or drum. You may run into issues going back and forth between #11 percussion caps and winged musket caps (using the appropriate nipple for each) with your particular gun, but you will not know until you try.

I appreciate your patience and clarification. My threads are 1/4-28. Hopefully I can find an appropriate nipple diameter for the winged caps. Now that I have that chart size to go by, will make it easier. Just wish nipple retailers would label their nipples for the winged cap. Sure, they do for 11’s, but haven’t seen any for winged. Again, thanks.

The point being if your gun is threaded for a larger thd it may be meant to use a winged cap. I simply stated that if you have a nipple that fits your gun and have proper sized caps for said nipple then try it. I.am not saying to try to use something you have to squeeze or otherwise. Please post a picture of your gun so we can know what we are talking about.

Maybe, but how would I know that if the rifle came into my possession without a nipple for comparison. Thus the reason why I ordered a replacement and designated for #11 caps. ( they are on their way)
Pics to follow. 1985 production. Italian made.
