I WAS VERY FORTUNATE to meet a man who loved dove hunting, and took me with him several years in a row. I had been dove hunting before I met him, but with IFFY results- having trouble finding fields where the dove were gathering. And, my friend had 5 or 7 different recipes for dove, each one tastier than the last. He died 7 years ago, and I lost his recipes with him. I did make one of his recipes up as I have described one year when he was busy and we could not get together to have a dove "feast". The weather here has been a huge problem most of the past 15 years, with early cold snaps in September, right after our season began, that sent all the birds in Illinois and Wisconsin heading down to Southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. So far, we have been luckier this Month, but its barely a week old.
The State is way too long to have just one set season, but for years, the season has begun on Sept. 1, and ends Sept. 30, for the entire state. The northern counties could stand to have the season open up earlier by at least a week, and the southern counties could stand to have the season close a week later than current dates. But, we would need an Act of God to get the legislature to change the seasons. They are too busy stealing our money and spending our grandchildren's money, too.
