New Getz 54 & 62 Barrels - load recommendation/suggestions?

I've a couple of rifles being built, using Getz barrels in 54 (42") and 62 (31") and I'd welcome recommendations/suggestions as to ball diameter & patch suggestions, as well as powder charge considerations.

Here goes.............Getz and Colerain....... .62 w/ 31 " barrel. No more than 90 Gr. FFG. More than 90 Gr. results in excessive recoil. Grease lube minimally applied to .013 " , compression Miked patching material. Ball diam. in .62 was ..610. Scratch built a .62 Jaeger rifle for Pa. deer , and finally moved up to a 38 inch barrel for a longer sight plane to get the 100 yd. performance I like.
Getz and Colerain.... .54 w/ 42 " barrel.... 85 Gr. FFG , Grease lube minimally applied to a compression Miked .013 " patch. Ball dia. .530
Havent used any Rice barrels in .62 , and .54 , but these loads might work there , too.. None of this is written in stone, it's just what I have used through the years..........

Check that Getz .62 caliber barrel for size. Every one I've had has been .600" diameter not .62 as advertized.

Both those .62 cal. guns are in Colorado, You are probably correct on the ball size. I will look through my stuff and see if I can research this further..........Sorry for the miss information. oldwood

The .62 caliber Getz barrel in my possession is a true 0.62" diameter, which may have been a result of this 28" barrel being a custom job for another forum member here some years ago. It has seven lands & grooves conventional rifling on a 1:72 twist. Grooves are 0.016" deep. Based on my experience with another .62 caliber rifle, I expect this barrel to require a charge of about 115-120 grains FFG Swiss to provide a straight 100 yard POA impact. The .62 caliber rifle I have been shooting has a 34" Colerain barrel with 0.615" diameter. It was a custom job, with very shallow and slow-twist rifling that nearly approaches the Forsyth definition. This rifle shoots very well in the 115-125 grain range, with outstanding accuracy (incredible accuracy, actually), and no brutal recoil. Others here really specialize in .62, notably Excess, who owns a bunch of rifles in this hard hitting caliber. These more experienced shooters gave me a lot of help here on the forum, and they were all correct in the end - my own rifle shoots OK with 115 grains FFG, but it shoots great with 120. You will likely find your gun somewhere in the range of 110-120 grains FFG.
I am intrigued to learn what design you are going with your 31". Is it a Jaeger? A Hawken? A British Sporting Rifle?

My .54 Getz does well with .530 ball, 0.020” patch, over 80 grains of FFG.

My Colerain .62 - 66 twist likes .605" ball in .015" or thicker patch. 100-120gr fffg or add 20gr ffg Goex. 7-1/2# gun with 2"x5" buttplate and little drop so recoil isn't bad.

My suggestion is to use a patch as thick or thicker than the grooves, and then as large diameter ball as you can load with your under barrel rod. Start at 80gr and work up and see what your rifle likes.

Nail, this guy ☝Excess650 probably has more experience with the .62 caliber than anyone else we will meet. I enjoyed a three-hour sit down with him a couple weeks ago and learned a ton.

I am no expert with my .54, because it took half of the folks here to help me get my load right after I changed powders (from GOEX to Swiss). Moreover, the 38" Colerain barrel is a gain twist, which takes less powder than standard rifling. Most shooters here said they were using between 80-90 grains of FFG in their .54s. Mine shoots 80-85 grains very accurately, and the doe I shot with it this January had the ball course diagonally through her and exit through the off shoulder joint. Of note, she was hit twice and each hit left a tuft of cut deer hair; very little blood was visible, even when she was found piled up. Have fun, looking forward to seeing your finished rifle
