New sights for Pedersoli Kentucky

Good morning Gentlemen.

I have a Pedersoli 32 cal Kentucky style flintlock. Lots of fun, but I'm not a fan of the rear sight it came with. It's a "V" shaped notch. This was never my favourite design. There is no adjustments to it up/down to it either. Gun shoots 6" low at 25 yards and is more accurate than I am. Don't usually admit it , but I have older eyes.

It's a hunter as well as a pop can shooter, so the sights need to be reasonably robust. HC/PC isn't a real consideration as it's hard to feel HC in Hunter Orange.

What are others using on their Kentuckys?

All my Kentucky rifles have a traditional rear sight “V” and blade front sight. I do in fact tune them to work with my 70 year old vision that isn’t what it once was. I have found a combination of the width and depth of the V in concert with a brass or German silver front blade that has a specific thickness, needs to be optimized to work well. The bright metal front gives the widest range of visibility, particularly in lower light hunting conditions. The right combination works as well as most all the alternative designs I’ve tried, is accurate, and still fits the design of the rifle. I don’t worry about adjustability since once they are drifted/filed to my POI, it “stays” that way for my chosen load.

I too am not a big fan of the v notch but can work with it. I like a square bottom notch with some width to center my front sight in. That allows for some windage corrections if needed. You need to file the front sight down to bring your point of impact up. You may want to look at a buckhorn style.

I use replacement primitive sights on mine but I do lean heavily towards HC/PC. There are tang sights that might help you but I know nothing about them or which one would work for you.
As rafterob said, file your front sight blade down. File a little, test the accuracy, repeat as necessary.

Thanks, Gentilmen. I think squaring the "v" might be the way to go. No problem with the front sight, but the back one is more of the problem. It looks fuzzy. As you say, a one load gun. Lowering the front sight isn't a problem. Shoots consistantly better than I can now.

As an afterthought changing the front sight to silver or copper is a good idea for hunting. Black shows up well on paper but not so well in low light/poor contrast settings.
