just about every year I do a wilderness hunt in upstate New York. Best hunt of the year. This year my time was spent hunting elk in PA. Now I have this New York license and some time to take a muzzleloader to New York in their late season. Question: Can my regular season buck tag be used as a doe tag in the NY late muzzleloader season?

Later ML season is either sex. And, we're over run with doe. Take two or three if possible. :)

Thank you. It’s what I thought but it’s not crystal clear in the NYSDEC regs. I saw a bazillion does in the Catskills while early bear hunting there.

It is stated in the regulations that the regular season tag is valid for antlered deer only. No matter what season.

I believe your answer is incorrect. Please explain how you came to your conclusion from the NYSDEC regulations. If I am wrong I apologize. Though I live in NC still hunt in NY every year and I am very familiar with their rules. From the NYDEC website. Note the statements in the red boxes.

Edit: Didn’t see @NoMansLand post with the correct information until after I posted my response.

You Must have a Muzzleloader tag

You Must have a Muzzleloader tag
Where are you getting this information? As long as you have the ‘muzzleloader’ privilege you can use your regular season tag for a buck or a doe during the late muzzleloading season (or archery if you have the archery privilege). Or is the NYSDEC website (and NYS Game Wardens) wrong about this? Reference post #9 above and the screenshot from the NYSDEC.

must have a muzzleloader privilege or tag . muzzleloader tag comes with buck or doe tag. so that gives you two tags either sex.
OP’s question was whether or not a NYS regular season buck tag could be used as a doe tag in the NYS late muzzleloader season. Per NYSDEC, yes it can, in spite of some stating one must have a muzzleloader tag.

I'm not sure we're hitting the mark yet. To hunt early or late muzzleoader season in NY you must have a specific muzzleloader season tag for either sex. Good for antlered or antlerless. There are some areas (i.e. Suffock County) that are antlerless only even with a bow or muzzleloader tag. A regular season (non-muzzleloader) tag is only good during regular season. IF you also have a Deer Management Permit in a specific unit (there are dozens) for antlerless - that is good in either the regular or specialty (muzzleloader/bow) seasons as well.

Regular buck season tag is NOT valid in the muzzleloading season. Period.

But it's all over now and hopefully you haven't lost your firearm and vehicle to impound.
