Improvised shot? There are several accounts, none of them including dripping lead from heights. That was normally a comercial venture, not done at the campfire.
The most common method was to pound a round ball flat to the desired thickness, then use a butcher knife as a chisel to form squares of the desired size from the flat disk of lead. In one instance I read that an individual placed such square shot into a skillet, along with some course sand, and shook the concoction, to polish of the sharp edges.
As previously stated, there were also molds made for all sizes of shot often provided for smoothbores sometimes with a cavity for a bore sized ball.
