Nickel plated shot for a turkey load...

I gave up on finding any of the original good quality Winchester Lubaloy copper plated #6s to tighten up my turkey patten some more...and learned that nickel plated shot is supposed to be even better than copper plated in terms of pattern density and penetration.

And since a special shot cup is not required to protect my .20ga flinter's bore, I ordered a bag of nickel plated #6s from Ballistics Products...will pattern test it place of the regular magnum lead 6's I've been using.

I hope the hype is true about the amazing improvements in pattern density at distance...if it is, I might even be able to shave off an 1/8oz or so from the shot charge and pick up some velocity.

I have used nickel plated #6 to kill one turkey in a 12 ga. pedersoli dbl. also got very good patterns with it in a 62 smoothie using your 20 ga. load. I like the performance.

Im glad I look at this post if for no other reason you gave the name of the place to order shot. I can not find it around here and tried all of the big name vendors after a google search and never got a hit for them. Thanks. :thumbsup:

I was looking at the plated shot a few years ago, and finally dug out some specs on the B.P. products. The nickel plated was reported to be 3mil thick over 2.5% Sb alloy in all sizes. The copper plating thickness was not specified, and it looks more like a wash rather than a substantial plating, but it's over the same alloys as their magnum shot: 3% for #4 & #5, 4% for #6, and 6% for #7.5. The magnum works well, but I got one bag of #5 Cu-plated just to see if it reduced feather balling any further - haven't shot enough birds with it yet to say for sure.

@#^&$%$#! :cursing: It appears that my father's eldest son can't read his own notes, even when they're on the computer. That should have been 3 MICRONS, not 3 mil. Which is 0.118 mil or 1.18/10,000", so that seems kinda thin to me.

Well, I have no personal knowledge of the quality of Ballistics Products brand shot...but Midway also carries the B.P. brand and both companies have been around long enough if there was a problem seems it would have surfaced by now.

Bare bore no cups IF you have a chrome lined bore. I have seen nickle flake off pistol cases and go down bore and scratch it pretty good. I would want to keep it from contacting an iron or bare steel bore by the use of a shot cup of some sort whether paper or plastic. JMO :bow:

Nickle plated shot has been used in Purdy's, Holland and Holland and Westley richards on live pigeon shoots for many years. Nickle plated lead shot is way softer then any of our steel barrels. I think you might be confused with the harm of steel shot and Tungsten shot.

Talked to the folks at Colerain today and they would not reccommend nickel plated shot in their turkey choke barrels. Said copper was OK.
