im well known in the hog hunting community in Texas before 4 years ago I bowhunted them only. I was bowhunting a WMA close to my house when the closest I could get to a hog was 50 yards, this WMA allows archery black powder and shotguns. 35 years ago in rual Indiana I worked for a gunshop- taking out trash and such when I earned my first muzzleloader. I want to say a cva mountain rifle. killed deer with it the same year. over the years I thought about black powder and my former mentor, he always talked about a .54 caliber. fast forward 2016 I got tired of the hogs busting me so I ordered a Lyman deerstalker .54 since I got the lyman ive gotten 20 more muzzleloaders mainly Thompson centers 9 .54s I have got some .50 cals .58 and a .72 double. in the last 4 years ive taken over 100 hogs using traditional muzzleloading rifles ive killed some with roundballs and on hogs under 200 the 50s and .54s work ok. wheni use rb now I use one of my .58s or my pedersoli Kodiak double .72 ive learned when shooting the big boys I use a conical in 50 cal the 600 gr no excuse .54 I use the 535 no excuse or the 425 great plains or the tc 430 maxi. 58s tow 600 gr .58 maxi or a .570 rb in my pedersoli ive got conicals that way 1000 grains they shoot ok at 25 yards but I prefer the roundball in my Kodiak 120 grains olde eynesford 2 F with the 500 gr rb makes the hogs drt. hog hunting is a passion, a passion that ive guided Tink the owner of Tinks69 to a record boar and many other famous hunters. I have a few friends on this forumn whos hunted with me. I stopped guiding and such in 2008 now I just hunt every week mostly every day and have been blessed with lots of private land to hunt.
This forumn has helped me so much with my journey back into traditional muzzleloading many members mentorship and advice has helped me along the way im the muzzleloading hunter I am now because of the men on this forumn
